Update December 2014

Ridgewood Public School

Dear Parents:
2014 is almost over. Well soon be
having the Winter Break. It is a festive
season and an opportunity for family
to spend time together building
stronger bonds.
In school, the students are busy
practicing for the Winter Concert and
we hope you will enjoy it.
The school has also started the
Leadership Action teams and
students meet every Monday to
discuss and prepare for the coming
Leadership Day.
During the Winter break, your kids will
be having a lot of fun. Please
encourage your kids to keep reading
daily so that their reading skills
continue to improve during the
holidays.
Ms Opanasyuk and Mr. Wong

Languages
In English and French, students will
learn how to analyze texts and explain
how specific elements in them
contribute to meaning (e.g., retell:
characters, setting, problem, solution,
plot development, main idea). We will
be using the reading strategy of
making connections (text-to-text,
text-to-world, and text-to-self). Well
learn how to use parts of speech
appropriately to communicate their
meaning clearly with focus on verbs in
the simple present, past, and future
tenses. Also, they will be watching
French videos and learn to use
listening strategies for better
understanding and developing their
oral communication skills.

Mathematics
We are continuing to finish up our unit
on Whole numbers. This week we will
be reviewing multiplication and
division strategies. Our next unit will
be on Geometry and transformations
(translation slide, rotation- turn,
reflection-flip) and using grids.

Begin with the End in Mind

What does it mean to Begin with the
End in Mind? It means, we need to have
a goal in whatever we do and
elaborate a plan to guide us to achieve
it. Without a goal and plan, we have no
directions and we will not accomplish
much. Begin with the End in mind also
means to think of the consequences of
our actions. What would happen if we do
this? Is this what we want? And then The students had the opportunity to
make the right choices.
