Green Recycling in the Volunteer State
In todays American Society, we tend to take what we have for granted, whether it comes
from the amount of luxury we have access to, to the large quantities of clean water that most
people are not able to have. Many more third-world countries deal with the reality of the
destruction that we have caused the earth to bear. Most of it is associated with the amount of
waste that is being produced and then hauled away to sit and decay for several centuries. The
articles that will be referred to throughout the paper discuss different aspects on the situation of
being a green community through recycling, while citizens have ignored the opportunity to
contribute to the three Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle. The public must put forth an effort to
see the benefits of recycling in order to help even with the smallest amount of an impact, and to
help influence many more areas throughout the country to partake in the wonderful experience of
becoming greener for the sake of the environment.
Local News Station WBIR makes an effort to address the public on topics that concern
the area. Tennessee has been known to have a poor impression of trying to keep the amount of
waste down, along with the effort to increase the amount of recycling. In the year of 2008, the
state had ranked towards the bottom in the US, eighth lowest, when the percentage of the
recycling rate was a pitiful 4.64 (Paine). Therefore it has become somewhat of a concern that has

been brought to the attention of the reporters working with the network. The news station (10
WBIR) for the area wants to let citizens know the importance of educating the public about the
growing landfills from the lack of reducing waste. Educating the public on the benefits of
recycling can also help with the businesses of the Public Waste Department, since they try to
urge the public to use their ability to recycle. The Penn Waste company stresses the fact that they
want to help through community commitment, sustainability and professionalism. Community
commitment means that they want to be able to improve the community and make the best
impression that they can give to show locals that they can be trusted to do their best work.
Sustainability is another topic that the company stresses because the purpose of recycling is to
help increase the level of sustainability by being committed to making a difference in not only
how [they] handle waste, but in the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill (Penn Waste).
Professionalism is included as well by making sure that the community can depend on the
company that is able to [provide] safe, dependable and courteous service (Penn Waste).
Much of the first article, Tn urged to recycle more from the news channel WBIR,
explains that the motivation to put towards recycling is lacking because citizens look at the costs,
and refer back to their traditional routine of throwing any waste away instead of trying to convert
to a more sustainable lifestyle that will benefit the area in the long run. The article starts with a
statement of a local who does not take the opportunity to recycle, and then leads to the issue that
people will be facing in the near future if we dont take advantage of the multiple green
opportunities. The recycling center called Penn Waste, has a website that has a page where it
describes the benefits of recycling. Most of the webpage includes statistical facts, such as
recycling in Pennsylvania in 2005 saved over 98 trillion BTUs of energy, enough to power
941,000 houses (Penn Waste). Their advertisement tries to persuade several people within the

Lang 3

area of the company to convert to recycling by showing the positive outcomes from taking the
daily waste and turning it into a useful source, such as energy, that can cut down on the amount
of household items thrown away. The website also shows that when the waste is sorted out into
separate categories, each section has a different energy source that it can produce and save, such
as metals, paper and plastics. The representation on the amount of materials that can be recycled
is shown in the pictures on the page as well, where a bulldozer carries a heap of waste ready to
be turned into something else useful.
Throughout the article of Tn urged to recycle more, the reporter seems to try to grab the
attention of the public by discussing that its partially politics that get in the way with moving
towards a greener society, with bringing up budgets and how politics viewed recycling inferior to
the more oppressing issues. This was a tactic to bring up the alarming topic of the growing
landfills, mostly focusing on the expanding landfill within the Middle Tennessee area. The
article had the goal to persuade readers the try to convert to the greener option opposed to
discarding large amounts of household waste. Penn Waste also addresses the issue, with the goal
of improving the companys business in mind. The curbside program draws in customers by
showing the Pros of recycling with examples of how much each waste material section can save
energy.
The article for WBIR was an informational article that aims for the attention of the
citizens, which includes fellow classmates and professors/instructors/staff of the Middle
Tennessee community. The genre was used to stress the issue of the poor effort towards
recycling in the state since there is not much that the Public Waste Departments can do to
enlighten the locals about the importance of becoming as sustainable as possible for the
communitys sake. So the article form was used to project the large amount of the damage that

Lang 4

pollution has done in the community, especially when focused on the amount of household waste
that ends up in the landfill. Penn Waste also used a informative genre to show that several
household items are not biodegradable, and that many of the waste items can be reused, therefore
trying to lead the public to joining the company and start using the recycling program available.
Between the two pieces of literature, the news article Tn urged to recycle more and Penn
Wastes informational website, theres a clear understanding that there are resources that are easy
to access that would make the act of recycling a simple process. The article Tn urged to recycle
more has more of an Ethos appeal because the text is projecting the view that the reporter
represents when looking at the background information on how the public has not improved with
being educated about conservation and sustainability. The issue addressed is represented in an
article that has been published on the news station website, so the article also shows the view of
the program. With the website page for Penn Waste, it shows the benefits of the recycling
program that they offer, which refers to the Logos appeal through giving the information that
projects a message to the public on the importance of recycling and the positive impact that the
recycling has to offer to the environment.
Much of what the news station addresses with where we are now, there is a delay with the
motivation to recycle because of the peoples lack of motivation towards making a difference
with how we treat the environment as a whole. The concern of how much money that the
government can produce has become a more important priority than putting towards the effort of
reduction of waste through recycling and educating the public about cutting down on the amount
of disposable items used. And with recycling centers, such as Penn Waste, who make a website
that shows the public on how they can be included in recycling programs; the point made is that
it only becomes helpful when the opportunity is taken advantage of. The impact of becoming

Lang 5

green will only benefit the present world by how conservative they want to become to help with
the recovery of the environment before the tipping point closes in.
