WCPS MD: Pre-Observation Form - Domain One

Evaluator: THOMAS GARNER

Practitioner: TYLER NEWCOMER
This pre-conference form provides a structure for meaningful conversation. This form is intended to be collaboratively completed by
the teacher and administrator during the pre-conference.

1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy

To which part of your curriculum does this lesson relate?
Writing- Common Core... W.5.5

How does this lesson incorporate the district-wide focus of either/or literacy and college and career readiness?
Technology will be integrated throughout the lesson. Writing is a required skill for college and career readiness. Students must
develop their writing to be productive adults and citizens.

1b: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students

How has this lesson been differentiated to meet the cognitive and developmental needs of all students?
This lesson's focus is on the writing process, specifically "Peer Conferences". Students will be grouped into different groups
based on their abilities to peer conference, the skills they can use, and the productive information they can share with a partner.

What methods have you employed to gain an understanding of the individual students approaches to learning?
I have spent quite a bit of time recently conferencing with my students to gain more information on their different approaches to
learning and the skills they have developed previous to coming to fifth grade.

1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes

What are your learning outcomes for this lesson?

The student with guidance and support from an adult or peer will develop and strengthen their writing through the steps of the
writing process.

How do these outcomes relate to prior or future learning?

Lucy Calkins breaks down the writing process into multi-step lessons. This is a supplemental lesson I have developed to help
the student to peer conference with another student about their writing.

1d. Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources

What resources will be utilized during the lesson?
Video, My Big Campus, GoogleDocs, small group instruction

1e: Designing Coherent Instruction

How does this learning fit in the sequence of learning for this class?
We have been studying the writing process for the last several class periods. They have looked at pre-writing and beginning a
realistic fiction piece previously with a rough copy.

How does this learning connect to other disciplines?

Writing is a concern with all fifth grade teachers in all disciplines. Our current group of students struggle to write in all content
areas. Revising and editing is a start to hopefully improving their writing as a whole group.

1f. Designing Student Assessments

How and when will you know whether the students have learned what you intend?
Students will be asked to revise and edit a piece of actual writing in a mock "peer conference" based on their ability.
