Say it loud, Im black and Im proud said Rick James. What we need is black power
said Stokely Carmichael. Huey Newton and Bobby Seale were inspired by Stokely
Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr., Rick James, Malcom X, and other powerful
individuals. Their influence inspired them to expand the civil rights movement by
creating The Black Panther Project in 1962. They encouraged the public to be proud of
their race, resulting in most youths chanting black is beautiful. This articles focal
point is based on coming together as one and bringing their voices to life. It displays how
they took pride in who they were by creating a pledge and noting important events that
made a mark in history, known as The Black Panther Project. This resource targets an
audience of people who support their race and the different ways they came together to
unite.
Austin, Curtis. Up Against The Wall: Violence in the Making and Unmaking of The Black
Panther Project. Fayetteville: University of Arkansas Press, 2008. Print.
The FBI, CIA, Police, etc. were not only killing members of The Black Panther Group
but were out to destroy their program and controlled the partys fate. This book gave
specific details with The Black Panther Partys involvement with the government. The
government won the war with the panthers by eliminating members or causing
psychological damage. They sent fabricated letters to the leaders of the group which
resulted in Newton and Cleaver not speaking to each other and weakening their cause and
main purpose. Daryl Gates, Chief of LAPD had a reputation for creating the gang-

bangers with badges. The public viewed LAPD as the only legalized gang because of
the riots they created. The governments main focus was to deteriorate The Black
Panther Party and unfortunately succeeded. The author states facts with supportive
evidence and storylines. Most of these are shown from many angles such as how things
were viewed by the public, the members, and even the governments perspective.

Huey Newton killed an Oakland officer and served his time for his actions. Chicago and
Oakland police kill members of The Black Panther and didnt serve a day in jail. Equal
rights have been overlooked and punishments were directed to specific members of The
Black Panther Project. This article is as powerful as my other source 54i Black Power.
Its similarities are powerful in their words of expression but also make very different
points. The other article expresses the positive influences of their race. This resource
speaks on the violence and labels The Black Panther Group encountered. For instance it
describes how the police attacked in several different ways; if members werent shot by
police, they were still punished and sent to jail. Some individuals were arrested for
attempted murder of the police. They were even given unfair court cases for attempted
murder instead of a self-defense case, like Seale who was denied a lawyer and sent to jail
for attempted murder for four years. Each situation was different and unfair.
Buursma, Bruce. Newton Praised As A Crusader. ChicagoTribune.com. Tribune Publishing
Company, 24 Aug. 1989. Web. 14 Oct. 2014.
This newspaper article is unique compared to the others I chose. This reference gives
quotes and descriptions from Hueys brother after his brother died. Hueys brother,

Melvin Newton made a statement after Huey was killed. If they (the critics) will forgive
Huey in his weaknesses, then we will forgive the United States for its genocide of the red
man and its incarceration of the black man. Meaning the crimes that have been done by
the government doesnt compare to what Huey has done for the communities. However,
if the critics can forgive Huey for his humane weaknesses then The Black Panther Party
can forgive them for their violent acts towards their organization which Huey was a part
in creating. The public thought Huey had contradicted himself in several ways. He stole
funds from the campaigns that The Black Panther Party created in order to support his
battle with drug abuse, he stole from drug dealers, and abused alcohol. There were also
mixed messages as to why Huey was killed. The public thought he was shot while being
involved in a drug deal that had gone wrong, but the Oakland police stated his killings
had nothing to do with drug abuse.
Newton, Huey. The Black Panther Intercommunal News. No New Trial for Gibson and
Justice X.11 (1973): n. pag. Web. 14 Oct. 2014.

Since this web article is the actual article that the Panthers created, it seems more realistic
and brings their history to life. Reading the different topics and comments that the
Panthers wrote for the public are inspiring, especially when describing how they showed
their support with the unfair trials that were given. When a superior court judge denies a
new trial for Larry Justice and Earl Gibson without a reasonable explanation, equal rights
is again questioned. The public thought the trial was denied for invalid reasons. The
finger prints on the murder weapon didnt belong to Justice or Gibson and the prison
employees confirmed two men running away from the scene were not Justice and

Gibson. There wasnt any clear evidence pointing them to the actual crime and their case
was ignored. This sparked other members of The Black Panther Project to start a fund in
honor of the two men to gain another case.
