Title: Eric Carle inspired tissue paper collage
Age Level and Number: Kindergarten; 19 children ages five and six
Purpose:
The children will use their imagination to create a tissue paper collage, like the collages
in all Eric Carle literature. They will use the images as a basis for their story book page. Each
student will be able to write [Childs name, Childs name], what do you see? I see a/an[animal
depicted in their collage] looking at me.
Work Sampling Assessment:
Behavioral Objectives:
1. The children will create colorful collages out of tissue paper and glue.
2. The children will create a storybook page during reading and writing workshop.
Materials:
1.
2.
3.
4.

One animal template per student (Eric Carle)

A variety of tissue paper
Elmers glue
Eric Carles book Have You Seen My Cat?

Motivation/ Anticipatory Set:

Anticipatory Set: Lay out various colors of tissue paper on the ground and have the children rip
up the tissue paper into various sizes. Then have the children sort the pieces into groups by size
and color. Allow students to take their favorite pieces back to their tables.
Motivation: Once the paper is sorted, I will push the groups aside and read the book Have You
Seen My Cat? by Eric Carle. During the reading, I will point out that each of the pictures in the
book was created by using various types and colors of tissue paper and gluing them down. I will
also discuss that there is a pattern on each page. This pattern continues until the break.
Procedures:
1. I will explain to the students that they will be creating their own tissue paper
collage on the provided templates. They will then write the patter [Childs
name, Childs name], what do you see? I see a/an[animal depicted in their

collage] looking at me on the lines beneath the picture, being sure to include
their own names and the animal that they decorated.
a. Today boys and girls, we will be creating our own collage, just as Eric Carle
did, using the tissue paper that we ripped up in the beginning of class.
b. Each child will be instructed to use no less than 3 pieces of tissue paper.
2. They will begin by choosing their pieces and gluing them down on the paper. I
will walk around and make sure that they each have the adequate amounts of
paper.
3. Once they have glued the pieces of paper that they selected, each student will
write their story on the provided lines. A model of this will be completed by the
teacher.
Assessment:
The students will hand in their finished products to be graded for completeness. The
teacher will create a class book with all of the completed artwork. This activity will count for
both reading and writers workshop for the day.
