CHDV 160 Observation & Assessment

Activity Planning Form

Name of Activity: Let's make a big splash or maybe a little splash
Remember: The activities must be based on the developmental level outcomes that you
documented on the DRDP: Not yet at first level, Exploring, Developing, Building, and
Integrating. Each activity should be planned to support the childs learning process to the next
highest developmental level. You will do a total of 6 activities on 6 separate domains of the
DRDP.
Domain: Mathmatical Development

DRDP Measure (write out the entire name of the measure):

35: Measurment
Definition: Child shows increasing understanding of measurable properties such as length,
weight, and capacity and begins to quantify those properties
Current Level (write out entire description):
intergrating: Shows understanding that print is organized into units( such as letters and words)
and knows some vocabulary that describes print
Emerging to Level (write out entire description):
intergrating: Shows understanding that print is organized into units( such as letters and words)
and knows some vocabulary that describes print

Length of Activity: 10-15 Minuets

Learning Objectives (specify at least three):

The child will be able to recite the numbers 1 to 15.

The child will be able to use measuring tools to see which wave is bigger or smaller.

The child will be able to show increasing ability to recognize and reproduce a graph.

Material/Equipment Needed

Construction paper

Glue

Measuring tapes/rulers

Pencils

large piece of construction paper

Big and small cut outs of waves.

Cut outs of boats and surfboards.

basket

Preparation (What do you need to do beforehand?):

Before class I will pin the large piece of poster board on the wall at childs eye level. It will be
placed above the work table.

In front of each chair their will be a piece of construction paper a glue stick.

I will set measuring tapes/rulers in front of my chair as well as the small and big wave pieces in a
basket.

The pencils will be set out in the middle of the table, as well as the cut outs of the boats and
surfboards.

Procedures (step by step) Be Specific

*Beginning (How will I introduce activity?)

During circle time I will tell the children that we will be doing a very fun and interesting math
lesson.

I will tell the children to go and sit at the tables that are already set up and ready. I will not
force any child to do the activity but will try to get them engage.

I will try to be at the table first so I can keep an eye on the children and be able to get their
attention so I will have time to explain what we will be doing.

*Middle: (How will I support/enhance/scaffold?) The person reading your lesson plan should be able
to identify what you are saying or doing to support your stated learning objectives. THIS IS VERY
IMPORTANT.

As we get started I will hold up different sized waves and ask the children which one is bigger. I
will tell the children to draw a line in the middle of their paper; I will go around and write small
and big in each section.

I will handout a couple of the cut outs to each child.

Before the children glue on any pieces, I will let them know that there are measuring tapes they
can use if they do not know which one is bigger.

And then I will tell them to glue the big pieces to the big side and small pieces to the small side.

I will ask the children if they can count out loud how many pieces they have on their paper once
each child is finished.

I will then have each child as called by their first name and tell them to show each other their
papers to see if their neighbor got them correct.

*End: (How will I bring this activity to a conclusion and transition to the next activity? Be very specific
in how you will transition the children.)

Once the children have had the chance to look at each others paper I will tell them all eyes on
me

Once I have all of the childrens full attention I will point to the big construction paper and say
now were going to graph to see how many big pieces we have and how many small pieces we
have.

Once we go through everyones paper, I will ask for a helper to help me see which section had
more and which one had less.

The children will have a chance after we have gone through the full activity to have free play and
I will leave the items out but will stay near the area.

I will give the children a 5 minute warning for cleanup time once the 5 minuets are up I will tell
the children to clean up and line up in front of the door from smallest to biggest.
