State Standard (VA):

3.5e The student will develop map skills by locating specific places, using a simple letternumber grid system.
3.6 The student will read and construct maps, tables, graphs, and/or charts.
Goal:
In this lesson the student will gain an understanding of the parts of a map: the compass
rose, scales, legend, title. Students will be able to look at a map and locate these items.
The students should be able to use these items on a map to locate different places.
Student Learning Objectives
Cognitive: Given a map, the student will identify and label parts of the map scoring at
least a 5 out of 6 on the given checklist.
Affective: Staying on task, the student will work independently, receiving at least a 4 out
of 6 on the given rubric.
Materials:
- KWL chart
- Post-it Notes
- Map Parts PowerPoint
- Map worksheet with a compass rose, legend/key, title, and scale
- Its on a Map Worksheet
- Treasure Map Worksheet
Prepare the Environment:

For this lesson, students will begin by placing their homework from the previous
day in the homework basket at the beginning of the class. They will then move to their
seats for the lesson. The teacher will stand primarily at the front of the class to teach the
lesson, but will move around the room for assistance and pulse checks. For written work,
students may use pencils. Students must raise hands and wait to be called on to ask or
answer questions. During group work, students will work together quietly.
Procedures:
Warm up: To begin the class, the students will place their homework from the previous
day into the homework basket at the beginning of the classroom. After students have
quietly returned to their seats, the class will do a quick review of what they have
discussed thus far in the week. The teacher will then explain that they will be discussing
more about maps, locating different parts of a map. The teacher will ask if anyone knows
what a compass rose, a legend, a scale, title, and grid are in relation to a map. After
discussing these, the class will turn to the KWL chart, filling in the first two columns.
Lecture: To begin the lesson, the teacher will pass out different maps to the students.
Each map will include each the components discussed during the KWL. The students will
be asked to label these things on their map as the lesson progresses. The teacher will then
show the PowerPoint discussing these topics. After the powerpoint, the class will go over
the handout, checking what the students had labeled for accuracy. If there is still time in
the lesson, the students will quietly work on the Treasure Map worksheet. If it is not
finished before it is time to wrap up, the page can be sent home for extra practice
Wrap up: Students will place any completed worksheets in the homework basket. The
class will quickly review the material discussed, and then return to the KWL chart. Each

student will be given a post-it note and be asked to write down one thing that they have
learned about maps in this lesson. Students will be given the Its on a map worksheet
and asked to put it in their homework folder to be completed for the next days class.

Assessment:
Pre-assessment: KWL
Formative Assessment: Labeling maps during presentation; Treasure Map worksheet
Summative Assessment: KWL; Its on a map worksheet
Adaption and Modifications:
At the beginning of this class, the students have to collaborate together to decide what 3
things they wish to include on the KWL for the days. While this gives them an
interpersonal experience, they also receive intrapersonal learning by completing
worksheets during the lesson. This helps keep their attention on the lesson, and gives the
writing practice as well. For this lesson, the use of the powerpoint helps give students a
visual way to learn about the material for the day.
Homework:
Its on a Map worksheet; Treasure Map worksheet if not completed in class.
