Rationale Statement 4
Statement of Standard Five : Application of Content. The teacher understands how to connect
concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking,
creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global
issues.
Name of Artifact: Sample lesson plan 1
Date of Artifact: Fall 2014
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement: No matter what it is that we do, we need to be prepared to accomplish whatever
task is at hand. The better the plan is, the better the outcome will be. That is why lesson planning is so
necessary in the profession of teaching. Standard five states that the teacher must be able to make
learners think critically, creatively, and use different ways of thinking to make students think about what
it is that they are doing. The only way that a teacher is able to really think about how to accomplish this
within a 45 minute lesson, is to make a plan to do so. A lesson plan keeps a teacher on task. It gives
them a set of goals for the day, and by sticking to those goals, students are better able to follow along
and understand the teacher better. Without a lesson plan, the lesson is disorganized and students wont
be learning material in a proper order and will have a harder time grasping new concepts. The class
would be chaotic, going from one topic to another at the blink of an eye, and there would be no goals to
accomplish. Without the goals stated in the lesson, there is no way to gauge students learning and
assessing them would be a mess.
Lesson planning is a huge part of teaching it presents a set of goals that a teacher must
accomplish within a set amount of time. These goals all pertain to student learning. Standard five states
that a teacher needs to be able to make students think critically and think from all different perspectives
to engage students thinking. A lesson plan allows a teacher to make a plan to accomplish this and helps

them stay on task. As a teacher, I always want to keep students engaged and thinking outside the box. In
my idea, there is a lot more that can be learned from the lesson than just the lesson material, and
getting my students to think outside the box can not only make them more proficient in the material Im
trying to teach, but it would make them better people in general and possibly help them with more than
just the material I teach. I want my lesson plans to reflect my goal as a biology teacher, as well as a
modern educator. My lessons are going to be engaging and I would like them to pertain to real world
problems with real world solutions. I would love for my students to better understand their other
subjects and life in general from the lessons presented in my class.
