Young Girl
II. Assessment
Pre-assessment (before planning lesson)
A few days before the lesson, I will ask students to fill out an exit slip describing things that they
consider necessities, and things they consider luxuries. They will need to contemplate the
difference as they work on their summative assessment. We will discuss these briefly in our next
class, students with questionable choices will be allowed to voluntarily provide a rationalization for
their choices.

Post-assessment
Students will write a narrative describing what their secret annex would look like. This would be
their safe place, and would include information about their necessities. These necessities would

not be food and water, but the things that are so important to them, that they feel they couldnt live
without them. We would discuss these in class after they have completed them. Upon completion
of the book, we will discuss any changes the students would want to make to their hiding place.
How would they feel after hiding for two years?

III. Planning
I would coordinate with the Special Education, or ESL instructors to develop any differentiations that
should be made to the rubric, students could possibly be allowed to draw the assignment and present
privately.
IV. Engaging the Learner
After being seated, we would discuss the current section of The Diary of a Young Girl. This lesson
th

should take place after the students read the entry for Wednesday July 8 , 1942. As a group, we will
discuss our thoughts regarding this section.

VI. Potential Adaptations to the Lesson {PAL}

In case of shortened class time, we will move the discussion to the next class period.

VII. Collaboration
I would collaborate with the History teacher in order to present this lesson during his or her unit on
WWII. I believe this cross curricular lesson would allow for a deeper understanding of the events as
they unfold in the text.
VIII. Reflection and efficacy (to be completed after teaching this lesson)
