Sexually Explicit Music and How it Effects Teens

Sexually explicit music has been evolving greatly throughout the 21 st century. As most
teenagers would agree, music is a way of freedom. Music acts as an important tool in
peoples lives. My research is focused on teens especially. The reason being that teens in
todays society are more concerned about their appearance than their performance in school.
Although technology in music continues to expand, so will the knowledge of young teens. Music
can be a gateway to relaxation, or quick pass to further knowledge of sexual interactions with
other teens.
I am no longer a young teen, but with my teens year coming to an end, I do admit that I
incorporated music into my everyday life. I consider music being important in my life; and I
know I am not the only person who feels this way. Of course as a teen, keeping up with the
latest trend and up to date music is all very crucial, but it is becoming so important that most
teens are starting to grow up quicker. What I mean by growing up quicker is, there are teens
with more pregnancies, now a days, their language has become vulgar and the way they dress
is not appropriate for their age. With technology advancing and making music an easy access
for anyone, it is causing teens to get a hold of any music they want. What is being talked about
in these sexually explicit songs is about sex, drugs, money etc. There is a message being sent
through these songs and teens are receiving the message very clearly.
There has been studies shown that teens who listen to sexually explicit music often, are
starting to have sex than those who prefer to listen to a different type of genre. Young boys
going through high school experience hormonal phases and are in their peek stages of puberty.
It is common for young boys to be curious about sex. But, with a lot of learning to do, some
boys become impatient. The sexually degrading music being played in todays radios makes
young teenage boys believe that they should already start experiencing sexual intercourse.
They then influence young girls to do it, and then it becomes a domino effect. Janine Bennetts
writes musicians who use this type of sexual imagery are communicating something very
specific about what sexual roles are appropriate and teen listeners may act on these
messages. This study was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development. All over the media, young celebrities are shown wearing excessively tight or
revealing clothes. Of course young woman want to be noticed and look up to their idols, so
they are easily influenced into looking, or dressing similar to them.
Technology is a way that music is even heard. Celebrities who have such a young fan
base are the ones who are most influential on most teens. Starting and ending with the way

they dress. Celebrities show off their latest fashion through media and young teen girls think it
is acceptable to dress the same. There is more sexually degrading music in this century then
there ever has been before. According to Tracy A. Stanciel on Chicago nows article, writers
It is hard for them because there are so many ads in magazines and on TC that are displaying
provocative clothing. What Tracy is saying is that, teens should dress their age, and not try to
look sexy. And, with the big contribution of technology, it is everywhere around them for
them to see. A big concern to other views of these videos that go along to those degrading
songs are their kids listening and watching them. With the way technology is advancing, it
becomes more difficult to keep the music, media, etc. away from everyone, especially young
teens.
The main points of my paper was that technology is what is broadcasting the media and
what is being show on the media. And with technology being everywhere, it is easy for curios
teens to access with their accessibility, teens are growing up quicker. First, it is a concern that
so many young teens sexually active. Second, the way they dress is an invitation for sexual
intercourse. Young teens are speeding up their childhood with the help of sexually explicit
music. The reason why I chose this topic is because it is a great concern to me that young girls
and boys are trying to grow up so fast. I dislike witnessing young girls dress provocatively and
see on social media the way these young boys and girls talk to each other. If it makes me, a
young woman in college uncomfortable, I could only imagine the rest of the women out there.
I could only imagine how parents in todays society feel. Knowing that they never grew
up around so much technology like today do. It is such easy access for them to get a hold of.
What worries me is that the internet is evolving more and more and quicker than ever. It is only
going to get worse and when my daughter and or son are in their teen years, I know it is going
to be difficult to try and keep them sheltered with all the chaos in the media. At the end of the
day, teens want to feel as if they can do whatever they want. They want their freedom and that
is understandable. Yet, they need to know their limits. And the more they hang around with
other teenagers who act the same, and listen to the same music, there is no way they will want
to change. Teens influence other teens easily. They fall into peer pressure quicker and soon
enough they dont even notice how they got to act the way they do.
All I am really trying to do is raise awareness of how technology plays a huge crucial role
into exposing sexually explicit media out to the world. I do think that even as me, a teenager
living my last teenage year, if I know that something in my own generation is a bother and
should be looked alittle more closely at, then so do other people, especially parents. Social
media should be taken more seriously, because teens in this 21st century are going to our next
generation, and if they got away with sexually degrading music, it is more common for the next
generation to get away with it also.
