Chapter 20 Notes:

1. How would you characterize the responses of the European nations after the assassination of
the archduke?
The European nations were angrier, it was one of the triggers that caused the First world. I feel that the
nation already had tension between them that, when they heard about the assassination of Archduke
and his wife that was they last straw which cause the world between the European nations
2. What do you think of Wilsons initial decisions to the growing flame of war in Europe?
I think that he was trying to peacefully trying to get both nations to be in agreement but he didnt really
do a good job because was also selling goods to both od the sides and when he said that they would stay
out of the war he wasnt really telling the truth because behind closed doors he was getting involved in
their affairs.
3.

Did Wilson have a duty and obligation to ban Americans from traveling to Europe?

No he did not have the right to tell the people what to do or not do, but I we see it from his point of
view he want to protect the people of the US. if that meant not letting them travel them he was going to
do that plus the situation in Europe was not controlled.
4. What did the slogan Peace without victory mean? And what may have influenced Wilson to
create such a slogan?
the quote Peace without victory was taken from an American Principles so I think that they were trying
to compare the events that was happening to the American revolution, and that the American didn't t
get their peaceful freedom until they won the war between England. he was hinting that someone had
to win so that they could have freedom and live peaceful.
5. Do you believe Wilsons initial intention was to remake Europe along an American image?
Yes I think so because he tried to because with his Peace without victory and then trying to get the
nation to be equal and trying to get them to all get along and trying to spread democracy to them and
saying how great it was. Even if he had already said that he was neutral.
6. Did the suffragettes exude unpatriotic sentiments by picketing for suffrage?
I think that they weren't being unpatriotic because they were right in my point of view because they
want to have a voice and they wanted the same treatment as the white man living in the United states.
And the government was ignoring them and they were mad but they thing is that they were trying to
settle another countries problem telling them that they should have democracy and everyone should be
equal. and they were doing that in their own country.

7. What historical evidence can you provide that upholds the Supreme Courts decision to sanction
the Espionage Act and Sedition Act?

8. what happened in Cuba years before where the media, newspapers were using lies and blo wing
up small things to get the people to thing that Spain was a bad country and they were not giving
correct information and they were just trying to sell their newspapers.
9. Read and analyze the choices on page 610
1.

he was going to the war but he wasnt going to fight so I think he would still have been a good
American and a good Christian because he did both.
2. he would have "disappoint" his country by not going and fighting in the war and that went
against they thing be didnt want o do and I think that the outcome of the future wouldnt have
been the same.
3. Because he also when and he served he encouraged people that were in the same situation as
him to fight in the war and help their country.

10. Do you agree that Wilson was The Savior of Humanity?

NO I dont really agree with that because Wilson did have a lot of good ideas when it came to the war
but he had no right to really be in that war. The war was between the European war and Wilson said
that they were not going interfere with the war and he did the exact opposite. He tried to get people to
look at things the way he did and tried to apply the American thoughts and ideas. I think he was being a
pain. I dont think that he was the savior of humanity.
11. Read Competing Visions on page 620 and decide who you believe provides a more compelling
argument regarding US inclusion in the League of Nations
I think that the United states did not have the any rights going into other countries when they are not
asking for help. If they do ask for help then I can see that they should go and help, but like in this cause
the Europeans really didnt need their help because the US already had said they were going to say
neutral. another example would be when they went to Cuba and the Philippines, they didnt NEED their
help but they still went.
