Quick Plan #3- Manifest Destiny

Section I- Description of the Method

1. Instructional Method- Concept Attainment:
The utilization of this method will come in handy for overarching
concepts and themes that students are to grasp. They can utilize this
method to create an understanding of a topic by making connections
between the details that create the overall idea. This method will help to
reinforce the ideas that make up a general theme.
2. Topic and Rationale- Manifest Destiny
I would teach this topic using concept attainment because it is a general
theme with many subtopics. Using these subtopics, students will be able
to create a full understanding of manifest destiny on their own terms; its
significance and relevance. I would also use this method to tackle topics
such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Great Depression.
3. Features and Purposes- Concept Attainment (Manifest Destiny)
The principle purpose of this method is to help students attain
overarching themes on their own accord. Students will be offered
subtopics, which will help them reach the theme of manifest destiny. This
method of inquiry will and acquisition of knowledge will promote greater
retention and a stronger association and relevance to the topic.
4. Advantages and Disadvantages- Concept Attainment
Concept Attainment does have a few potential drawbacks. As you want
students to come to the concept at their own pace, this may take a large
chunk of classroom time. Also if students think they have acquired the
concept it must be accurate otherwise they may make false associations.
The advantages, however, are that it promotes strong connection and is
grounded in critical thinking and inquiry. This is also a fun method that
students are sure to enjoy and remember, further promoting the
retention of knowledge.

Section II- Implementation of Method

1. Learning Objectives- Students will be able to create understanding

surrounding the overarching themes of manifest destiny by participating
in the concept attainment activity.
2. Materials- Students will need their ability to work well with others and
think critically. Students will also need pen and paper.
3. The Model- The model of teaching for this lesson is Concept Attainment
because it is a fun and engaging way to help students acquire the theme
of manifest destiny. This method promotes retention, inquiry, and critical
thinking.
4. Key Terms/Concepts- For this lesson key terms include, manifest destiny,
westward expansion, gold rush, railroad, covered wagon, Louisiana
Purchase, and expedition.
5. Background Knowledge- Students must know that the United States
pushed westward throughout the 19th century. They should also be
aware of the role technological advancements, race relations, and politics
played in this migration.
6. Assessment- Students will be assessed by their participation in and
acquisition of concept attainment via a ticket out the door including a
summary of manifest destiny.
