The general argument made by the Associated press and News Ela staff, in the article
NFL urged to crack down on players who hurt women is that NFL players who abuse women
should face a far more harsh punishment than what they are given. First they state that
domestic violence towards wives or girlfriends has become a serious issue in professional
sports. In addition, the press claims punishment doesnt fit the crime. To support this idea, they
specifically write, Take the case of Ravens running back Ray Rice. The football player is

sitting out just two games for a serious offense: allegedly beating his girlfriend into
unconsciousness. For Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon, meanwhile, smoking pot may
lead to a far harsher punishment a yearlong ban. Although the press does not say
so directly, they apparently assume that it is simply unfair that the crimes arent justified.
Basically, the essence of the argument is that the domestic violence should acquire a
far harsher punishment than a couple days of suspension.
In my view, the presss argument is valid because how can hurting another
human being be justified by a two game suspension when smoking pot is punished by a
year long ban? I can accept that the presss claim that They say it's time for the league
to crack down on players who hurt women., although I question whether the NFL really
is going to crack down on the situation. For instance, numerous letters and groups has
been submitted to NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, but there were still no change or
justice to the domestic violence case. It is important to acknowledge other perspectives
on the topic such as whether or not theyre allowed to the NFL take domestic violence
seriously. Although some might object that the ban of these so called great football
players be issued upon, I would reply that an athlete isnt about how well they perform,
its about how the carry themselves on and off the field with their attitude and behavior.
This issue is important because little kids that look up to these athletes may grow up
thinking domestic violence is okay when youre a big time athlete.
