In recent discussions of the deadly virus, Ebola, one controversial issue has
been the effectiveness of quarantines against Ebola. On one hand, doctors argue that
there are three strategies that contain the spread and entry of Ebola in the United
States. On the other hand, Mukherjee opposes that there are weakness to these
strategies of containment. Others even believe that the Ebola virus can just slip
through countries, making it almost impossible to track its origin. In the words of
Siddhartha Mukherjee, one of this views main proponents, by the time an Ebola carrier
has a fever, her or she is already in an infectious phase and may have exposed many
others to the virus.According to his statement, even though the strictest procedures of
containing the virus, it can still be spread quietly. For instance, less severe fevers can
be hidden with the effects of Tylenol. In summary, then, the issue is whether we are
safe or not.
My own view is any virus as big as Ebola can spread, but there are ways we can
prevent ourselves and our beloved others from being infected. Though I concede that
the chances of the Ebola virus spreading is very high, I still maintain that it is always
okay to be extra safe. For example, clean hygiene and staying away from any dead
infected animals can also protect yourself from the virus. Although some might object
that washing your hands will keep the virus away, I would reply that it never hurts to be
a little more safe. This issue is important because, this virus could start an epidemic in a
matter of weeks. Obviously, you cant fully contain the virus but, you can prevent
yourself from catching the deadly virus.
