Personal Philosophy of Technology in Education
By

Samantha Daley

Lecturer: Miss P. Hibbert

The present generation is of a digital age, this requires teachers to make accessible learning
environment that provides activities that will tackle students diverse learning styles, using digital
tools and resources.
As an educator I concur with Jerome Burners (1966) constructivism theory, students learn best when
they are actively involved in the process of building knowledge. I believe there is no better way for
students to actively build knowledge than with experience; of such the infusion of technology in
education can equip students with the experience needed to construe their own learning experience and
transfer this understanding into meaningful learning and become critical thinkers. I also believe that
constructivist teacning inspires students to be independent and creative learners; and this is the learning
environment that should be encouraged in modern classroom.
I believe it is important that technology in education be integrated or infused into the classroom
as it is essential for the growth and achievements of students. Using the various web tools
available to develop the lessons creates an interactive environment which readily caters for the
different learning styles. The games and software will provide a vast amount of experience as
students are active learners and allow them to extend their learning beyond the classroom as they
linked in a bigger environment.
I believe that technology has become a central point of education and teachers should educate
themselves with it as well. Teachers should move away from the pencil, paper, chalk and talk era
and openly and readily accept these changes; as the students we now teach are all digital natives.
Furthermore the usage of technology enables teachers to access information easily and
communicates effectively with students. In return students will be motivated and perform better
academically.

Reflection of the course Technology in Education

by

Samantha Daley

Lecturer: Miss P. Hibbert

When I first started the course Technology in Education, I was very excited. While Miss Hibbert
the lecturer briefly explained the topics we will be engaged in, goose bumps filled my entire
body in bewilderment and anticipation of what is to come.
As the weeks progresses my excitement dampened, as we were not using the tools that arouse
and excites me. Instead we were learning the theoretical aspect of the course. The topic in this
stage of the course that enthuse me the most is Why do we integrate technology in education.
As it helped me to execute my lessons better and encourages me to model using technology in
the classroom. In other words it made me challenge myself in becoming a better educator.
I have learnt a number of things from the course, both theoretically and practically. It taught me a
valuable lesson that students will remember more when they see and do things for themselves
which brings me to Dales Cone of Experience and the importance of the ADDIE and ASSURE
models when planning my lessons. Most of the tools I used during the course I was either seeing
or using for the first time as in some cases I am both seeing and using for the first time; examples
of these are the webquest, podcast, picture story, electronic white board and the wikia.
The course work piece which permits us to demonstrate the combination of technology in our
lessons was so captivating and stimulating. The usage of the different software was so
interactive, student centered and attention-grabbing. However, the most important thing I have
learnt is the integration of technology in my lessons. This integration assumes the attention of
each student which in return provides an opportunity for experience and valuable learning. This
experience creates a crave in students wanting to explore more and to take on new challenges.
The course has helped me tremendously with incorporating technology in my lessons, having
students engaged more meaningful and teach me how to operate numerous technological tools.
