    Chinese uses tone marks to indicate the pitch of a syllable. A tone mark is placed on the vowel a or e if they are present, otherwise it goes on the final vowel. If the syllables contains ou, the tone mark is placed on the o. In all other cases, the final vowel receives the tone mark.

    Tone Placement

    A and e have first preference for the tone mark. There are no Mandarin syllables
    in Hanyu Pinyin that contain both a and e.
    In the combination ou, o takes the mark.

    In all other cases, the final vowel takes the mark
