Goal 19 : Communication

Communicate and collaborate with special services personnel to ensure that instruction and
support services for special populations are provided according to the assessed levels of
academic, behavioral, and social needs.

Artifact 19.2: Modified Assignment
Goal 19 reminds us that it takes a village to educate a child. This village consists of student, parent,
teacher, administrator, school, and community. In Artifact 19.1, I show a report that I send home to
parents. I randomly pick 3 students every week and send this report home with them so that the parents
can have access to what I observe about their student during class. Parents see what I think about the
students behavior, study habits, and grade. The student and parent also have the option of adding
feedback before returning it to me. In this way, I have a systematic way to communicate with parents,
even the ones who do not wish to talk to me directly. If any IEP or other kind of meeting arises, I simply
bring this form to the meeting, particularly as a reminder of previous communication.
The second artifact, 19.2, shows accommodations that I made as a result of communication between
the teacher, student, and parent, and counselor in which the student expressed a desire for these
accommodations. The first accommodation is that, instead of explaining the problem on the
whiteboard, I have placed the work directly on the worksheet with tips throughout the problem so the
student can clearly see how the problem is done from beginning to end. This is to satisfy the students
desire for having notes and practice problems on the same page. The second accommodation is
including an answer key at the bottom of the page. This is to satisfy the students desire to receive
feedback more quickly when she is doing homework at home and wants to know if she is being
successful. By communicating, we are able to agree on accommodations like these, which end up
benefiting other students as well who might know how to communicate frustration but might not know
how to communicate what they need. The commitment to communicate amongst different parties at a
deep level makes such accommodations possible.
