My Puppy
Taking care of pets is indeed a life changing experience. Having domestic animals enable
individuals to enhance their humanity and learn how to appreciate and take care of other
creatures (Clutton-Brock, 2004). This essay is about a puppy that I met and domesticated. The
puppy changed not only my perspective, but also my familys perspective towards animals.
I met the puppy when I was still young while attending a football match with my siblings. I
was so concerned about the well-being of the dog and took it home despite my parents attitude
towards puppies. I always loved animals but my parents were so strict on my education that they
couldnt have allowed me to keep a pet. Most of the children in my neighborhood had pets like
rabbits, cats and even dogs. I always envied other kids and this time I had to convince my parents
to allow me to keep this homeless dog but they still insisted that I will be allowed to have one
when I reach my pre-teen. My uncle Harry is the one who convinced my mother and she allowed
me to keep the dog. I was happy as now I could brag to other boys about my dog.
The dog looked pretty and innocent. It is brown in color. The young puppy had blue round
eyes. It was about a feet high when I met it. The puppy had curved tail and four tiny paws. The
tail and paws were all white. The dog looked weary and hungry. My childhood dreams were to
one day own a pet, and I was so excited to meet the puppy.I named the puppy Harry because it

was my uncles effort that made me have it. I liked my dog and took good care of it. I kept it neat
and clean. I always made sure that I wash its body every day with soap and plenty of warm
water. I built it a nice kennel and kept the place neat. I feed it with healthy, and the necessary
food, and it grew big and healthy.
Harry was playful and always jovial. It gained good health and became stronger. Harry was
faithful pet; it was always loyal to its master. Harry rarely slept at night. It kept watching our
home. It barked whenever there was a stranger around. Harry followed me wherever I went. It
was obedient and knew when I was angry at it. Sometimes I thought I was grateful to me for
taking it from the streets and gave it a home. Harry ran to me, whenever I call its name.
The puppy was so good and innocent, and this made my parents too started liking it. I
went hunting and herding with the dog. During hunting, it could capture animals that were
difficult for me to capture before. It helped me a lot during herding as it prevented the cattle from
destroying other peoples properties. The dog was also a source of security at home. It feels good
to be responsible and that the people, plants or animals are given appropriate care. This means
that everyone is encouraged to at least show some element of responsibility to animals because
they are dependent on humans.
My experience with Harry changed my earlier perception of undermining animals. I
learned that other creatures have some abilities that human beings lack. I discovered that it was
important for all individuals to take care of other animals because the domestic animals can be of
help to us. My parent also started liking animals and after Harry had grown old they bought other
dogs. I also realized that dogs are faithful pets. They always like their masters. It feels sad
walking in the streets and seeing people mistreat animals. Animals are great friends and can

make good friends if they are well treated. The state governments should impose strict rules that
ensure that animals have rights just like human beings.
