Assignment 10 Macbeth
1. In Act 2, Scene 1 Lady Macbeth is audacious in following the plan for Macbeth to kill
King Duncan. Her strength is giving him the courage and hunger to murder. On the other hand,
her weakness is doubting her husbands ability. To ease her mind, she informs Macbeth that her
ringing the bell is a reminder to act on killing the king. In addition, she could not kill King
Duncan herself because the king reminded her of her father. Also, she is a woman. In Act 2,
Scene 2 Lady Macbeths weakness is fearing her husband did not go through with his evil act.
She is anxious, but relieved when Macbeth tells her it is done. Lady Macbeths strength is
comforting her husbands fears and covering up his mistakes. She is driven to put the dagger and
the kings blood on the bodyguards.
2. In Act 2, Scene 3 the most memorable picture I formed is Macbeth explaining to
MacDuff why he killed the guards. I could imagine Macbeths innocent face explaining his
heart to love King Duncan. He could not help himself but to kill, the murders, their daggers
unmannerly breached with gore (OpenSourceShakespeare 2, 3,895-905). Macbeth ironically
explains his loyalty and true love for the king made him act violently. It was all just an act to
cover up the evil deed he has done.

3. Macbeth is very troubled before he kills King Duncan. His mind cannot rest. He is
plagued with fear and doubt by visually picturing his crime. Never the less, he willfully kills the
king. Macbeth is overwhelmed with guilt and remorse. His state of mind dreads that in the future
his sin is going to haunt him. He will no longer sleep peacefully. His evil sin has separated him
from God. I feel no sympathy for Macbeth. He knew the consequences he was going to face.
Macbeth had many chances to back out, but he chose to give into the temptation of evil.
4. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are unhappy because no matter how much they try to push
the feeling of guilt aside it still settles in their minds. In addition, they are both worried that
people might suspect them as murderers. It seems that they rather be dead instead of feeling
worried all the time. As Lady Macbeth said, Tis safer to be that which we destroy Than by
destruction dwell in doubtful joy (OpenSourceShakespeare 3, 2, 1175). The anxiety drives
Macbeth to plan his murder for Banquo seeing that his friend is suspicious of them.

5. Macbeths active imagination reveals the inner conflict of guilt. He is mentally putting
himself in agony. He has a delusion of the ghost of Banquo who is accusing him of murder
instead of the ghost of King Duncan. Macbeth is restless and starts verbally talking back to the
ghost of Banquo. He proclaims that he is innocent to Banquo.
