Kapitan Tiago and Tasio are two of the most memorable characters in Jose Rizals Noli

Me Tangere. In this essay we analyzed the similarities and difference between the two
characters. Joan Malaya wrote about the differences between the two, while Paolo Teodoro
wrote the paragraph on their similarities.
Tasio is in direct contrast to Kapitan Tiago. The two are best contrasted by the
description of each of their respective houses. Kapitan Tiagos materialistic personality is
emphasized by the numerous paintings and other lavish furniture in his house; while Tasios
unmaterialistic nature is shown by the presence of almost nothing but books in his abode.
Another difference between Tiago and Tasio is the amount of knowledge they possessKapitan
Tiago has none (Rizal called him narrow-brained,) while Tasio devoted his life to amassing
knowledge (to a point that he is regarded him as a lunatic because his mind is at a much higher
level than most people). Tiago is obsessed with wealth and has a small fortune to his name, while
Tasio is obsessed with books and does not pay any attention to money. Tiagos obsession with
money is exemplified by his many business ventures (lending land in Binondo, planting in San
Diego, supplying food to Bilibid prisoners). Tasios indifference to money is shown by his
neglect on the fortune he had inherited while buying books to gain all that he wants: knowledge.
