Project #3
Natural Frequency due to Mass Analytical vs Computer Simulation

Rochester, NY / September - 2014

I. Objective:
In this project, the objective was to find and analyze the 1st Natural Frequency of a Disk-Shaft
System when the mass of the disk and the shaft change from a range of diameter and length. It
was used computer simulation, SOLID WORKS, to verify the 1st Natural Frequency.
II. Summary:
To this project, the 1st Natural Frequency was verified analytically and through computer
simulation. For the analytical results, calculations were done in excel, where tables and graphs
were shown, to compare with the results found in the simulation with SolidWorks. During the
creation of the tables, the diameter of the disk and the length of the shaft changed due to the
objective of creating graphs that characterize the behavior of the models. Finally, the simulation
was done in SolidWorks and then it was compared with the analytical solutions.

III. Conclusion:
The results found in both analytical and Computer Simulation are quite realistic with the
expected results. This work was well done where tables was used to show the behavior of the
data when the mass of the disk and the shaft was changed and compared. After the computer
Simulation, pictures showing the simulation was disposed to shown the behavior of the system
simulated through FEA/CAE.
