1. Present to the students a PowerPoint introducing the topic of an Animals
Needs, which will provide key words the children will need to know before
entering the lesson and give examples of what both a household pet and
wild animal will need to survive based upon their environment.
2. Have the students watch the video Needs of Animals:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe9kSlVeEIM to offer them a visual to
connect with what they have just learned.
3. After offering several examples, offer time for a class discussion and ask the
students if they can provide their own examples of an animal and what they
think its needs may be.
4. Have the class listen to the video The Needs of an Animal Song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1GTcvovh
A&list=PLbsWyo2XU6AyCXZhybtatG70tumQRcki_&index=3 to offer them
repetition of the subjects material and to better engage their creative
minds.
5. Work together as a class to complete the worksheet
http://laimooikeowd20102042511.blogspot.com/ connecting the animal to
the correct habitat.
Day Two:
1. Break the students into groups of 4, they will work on a project where they
will use the laptops/computers and work on the program Windows Live
Movie Maker. They will create a short movie on an animals specific needs.
2. Explain the project to the students and provide them with previously
designed examples.
3. Each group movie will need to be at least a minute long and contain at least
7 slides which include the title slide, 5 body slides and a credit slide. The
video needs to include at least 5 pictures, text, sound, animations and
transitions. The movie needs to be at least a minute long.
4. Each group with be assigned a different animal to research and create the
movie on.
5. The entire group with work together to brainstorm and share ideas but
every group member will each be given a role or responsibility towards
completing the movie. One student will find the facts and information that
relates to their animals needs, another will be in charge of typing the text
into the movie, another group member will find pictures to insert into their
project and the last member will find sound or audio to insert into the
movie. The group will work together on completing the video by adding
animations, transitions, etc.
6. Give the students the rest of the 45 minute period to work on their project.
Day 3:
1. Have the students continue working in their small groups to complete the
movie project.
2. During the last 15 minutes of the lesson period, have each group volunteer

Assessment

Students will be assessed by their completion of their project. Students shared ideas
through purposeful conversation among their groups and applied that information
into their projects. The groups movie about their given animals needs is
informational and creative, followed by the guidelines given. Their work shows they
can properly identify an animals needs and understand how food, water, air and
environment apply to an animals survival.
