Program Site - Turtle Rock Elementary

Facility
o Multipurpose Rooms
1 The first multipurpose room is where kids are initially dropped off
and later picked up. It is used for homework help for grades 4th - 6th.
2 The second multipurpose tool is used for homework time for
grades 1st 3rd
3 The third room is only used for active parts of the program. All
passive parts occur in rooms one and two. Students need to choose to
be in this room

The Kitchen was not used during my fieldwork hours

The facility is located at the center of the Turtle Rock Community
Park. The park is rarely used

o Observations
Something that I noticed is that the staffers tend to only help students
of the same gender. The boys stick with the boys and the girls with the
girls
The site coordinator, Linda, is feared by the students. She is a kind
person but tends to yell at the students to get her point across
There are often staffers who do almost nothing
Schedule
o Students begin arriving at 2:00pm and play inside until 2:30pm after which
they play outside until 3:00pm
o From 3:00pm to 3:30pm, students read
o From 3:30pm to 4:30pm, students work on homework
o From 4:30pm to 5:15pm, students have the choice to do an active or passive
activity
o From 5:15pm to 5:45pm ,students play inside in the first multipurpose room

o From 5:45pm to 6:00pm, students clean up until they are picked up by their
parents
Student Needs
o What Worked
The program excelled when it came to recreational activities. A lot of
the students use their play time to stay physically active and they have
fun.
o What Didnt Work
Although this program seemed like an extension of Turtle Rock
Elementary, the site does not focus on learning. Theyre reading and
homework time is not used effectively and only a handful of students
actually do their work.
