Curriculum Unit Overview

RIVER SYSTEMS: THEN AND NOW

Exploring Rivers in California and Ancient Mesopotamia

Grade: 6
Big Idea
River systems are integral
to the rise of civilizations.

Essential Question

Curriculum Unit Overview

River systems are an integral part of human civilizations all
around the world. The first civilization grew out of the banks
of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Mesopotamia. In this
unit, students will explore the Sacramento-San Joaquin River
Delta, or other local river system, to learn the ways in which
people have used the river to help build communities.

How do rivers affect the

land and its people?

Six Facets of Understanding

Enduring
Understanding

Explain how humans used rivers to benefit their

communities.

Rivers

Interpret from nonfiction text how rivers pose a benefit and

challenge to growing communities.

systems are found

at the heart of
civilizations.

Humans use rivers in

different ways to benefit
their communities.

From this curriculum, students will be able to:

Apply their knowledge of local river systems to that of

Ancient river systems.
Gain perspective of their location on earth and the
surrounding geographical features by exploring and
interacting with digital and interactive maps.
Empathize with the challenges of living along rivers in less
developed areas of the globe.
Gain self-knowledge about how people contribute to the
health of their rivers.

and Google maps, using features such as
zoom, scroll, drop pins, etc.

geographical features on a map.
describe ways in which the river affects
people.

draw graphic organizers in digital drawing

programs, such as Google Drawing

write a response to inform about a topic.

Misconception
Often, students wonder why we need to study
the past. By linking the river systems in Ancient
Mesopotamia to the river systems in their local
communities, students will come to understand
how rivers have played vital roles in the
development of their own communities for
thousands of years, and that we should
preserve them for the future.
