Results (font size 12, single spaced, and written in past tense)

Result section of the research paper is a concise paragraph that has two main goals. The first goal
is to summarize the major findings in terms of the measures of central tendency (mean) and
variation (range, standard deviation). The second goal is to state how these results support the
hypothesis. The following four steps are useful in constructing this paragraph:
1. Write a topic sentence stating the independent and dependent variables and a reference to any
data tables and graphs.
For example: Data Table, Graph and Statistical Table A, B, and C show the effect of medicine
on the heart rate of daphnia.
2. Write sentences comparing the measure of central tendency (mean) of the groups (levels of
independent variable).
For example: The mean heart rate of daphnia in the control group was 180 bpm, in
the Advil group was 190 bpm, etc...
3. Write sentences describing the variation (range, and standard deviation) of the data within
groups (levels of independent variable).
For example: The range of the control group was 45 bpm and the standard deviation was 30.
The range of the Advil group was 60 bpm and the standard deviation was 25.
The range of the Motrin group etc...
4. Write sentences stating how the data supports the hypothesis. Use the p-value obtained from
the t-test to state whether there was a significant difference between the control group and the
experimental groups (each level of independent variable). Remember, if the p-value is less than
0.05 then there is a significant difference and had an effect.
For example: A t-test was used to test the significance level at 0.05. The calculated p-value
of .03 between the control and the Advil group show significant differences.
Therefore, Advil had an effect on the heart rate of daphnia. The calculated
p-value of .72 between the control and the Motrin group show no significant
differences. Therefore, Motrin had no effect on the heart rate of daphnia.
Below the result paragraph on the same page, the following must be included. Be sure to resize
