Statement of Standard 11: Ethical Practice
Content of Standard: Teachers shall act in accordance with legal and ethical responsibilities
and shall use integrity and fairness to promote the success of all students (NJPTS, 2014 pg. 14).
For all educators, there is a responsibility to maintain a professional demeanor inside of
the school system. Aside from the responsibility of teaching the students, the educators at DVHS
all created a well balanced climate. The teachers observed at the school all visibly cared for the
students in such a way that the students felt comfortable being their own. In other words, The
teacher recognizes, respects and upholds the dignity and worth of students as individual human
beings, and therefore dealing with them justly and considerably (NJPTS, pg. 15). In standard
11.iii.3 in critical dispositions, the teachers have the obligation to not only teach curriculum
content to all students, but to recognize that all students are human beings as well. Therefore,
teachers should give all students the chance to learn and grow.
Many times in my blog posts I have discussed the climate at DVHS. All of the teachers
that I had the chance to observe and collaborate with were very much the true definition of a
teacher. I have learned to understand that all students are different in their learning abilities and
their backgrounds. There was a time where I observed one of the teachers classrooms with the
lower level students. These students clearly did not care about their grades, however the teacher
did, and she made it known to them. I will never forget the time when she went around and told

every student that she will not give up on them. Not only was this moment powerful for the
classroom, but for myself as well. The teachers at DVHS talked to the students individually
about school work and personal experiences. They wanted the best standardized tests as a way
for the students to feel good about themselves, not to watch them fail. They wanted the best
schedule for the school so that students had the appropriate time in class. They wanted
modernized classrooms to fit the needs of all students. Most importantly, they made it known
that all of the teachers were there to help them.
Overall, my experiences throughout this time have given me the chance to see the
profession of teaching in a whole new light. There is an underlying responsibility that teachers
need to have when it comes to their school and the students. I know now how to defend myself
as a future educator when people believe that teachers have it easy.
