On December 10, 2014, Child Support Enforcement Officer Cheryl Gantert sent a letter to unemployed mom Lauren Lamouille with legal action if she does not pay them $475 by the day after Christmas. Child support is the only debt one can be incarcerated for not paying. Last summer, CT's Child Support office succeeded in having Lemouille incarcerated over a few hundred dollars in arrears, leaving her in a position where she is now preparing to file for bankruptcy. According to Lemouille, her mother had to bail her out of jail using her retirement money.
"My arrearage accumulated so quickly, and cost me everything...my career, drivers license, license to practice in insurance industry" says Lemouille. "I'm now facing foreclosure & am on food stamps, when I was just buying a home 3 years ago. How does that happen?"
Whose children really benefit from Connecticut's policy on jailing parents who are unable to pay child support?
