Course Content & Objectives
Welcome to Community Volunteerism 1 & 2! It is my pleasure to congratulate

I strive in teaching my students course content and real world experience,
while developing skills that are transferable to the workplace. All of my
assignments are designed around project-based learning. More information about
the assignments can be found below.

Research Presentation Chart
You and your partner are responsible for investigating 3 volunteer organizations you
are interested in. Once you have looked at 3 different places you are going to
chose ONE you want to present on. Follow the steps below and make sure you hand
it in! This is being taken for marks, as per the project outline. See the bottom of the
page. *
The 3 Volunteer Organizations we looked at are:
1.
2.
3.
The Volunteer Organization we chose to present on is:
1.
Please briefly explain in 3-5 sentences which organization you chose to present on
and why.

Please briefly explain in 5-7 sentences why you did not choose the other 2
organizations.

ALL ELEMENTS OF THIS CHART NEED TO BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE

FULL MARKS FOR IT.

Volunteer Hours Outline

Volunteer Hours (50%)
Volunteering in or around the city is the main component of this course. Gaining
practical experience as a volunteer is priceless. You will be required to complete 30
hours of volunteer work throughout the semester. You will be responsible to contact
and set up your hours with YOUR CHOICE of organization (must be a not for profit
organization). How you work your hours is up to you. If you would prefer to volunteer
on the weekend, or at night you can do that. You will, however, be given 10 classes
to volunteer, which means you can volunteer during those times as well. As you are
completing your volunteer hours you will be required to keep a daily blog. An entry is
required for each day you volunteer. See below for more details. Upon completion of
your hours you will receive a certificate in recognition of your contribution. This
certificate is an excellent addition to your resume or portfolio when job seeking.
You will be given a chart to track your hours, which will be handed out during our
volunteer etiquette class.
IMPORTANT NOTE**
You cannot begin volunteering until we have had our volunteer etiquette class
(next week) this is a mandatory class, which all students must attend in order to
prepare them for this experience.

13

Daily Blog Outline

Daily Blog (10%)
Each student will need to post a blog entry for each day they volunteer. You post
must include the duties you performed that day, the interactions you had with others,
how you felt before you started and after you started, challenges you faced (if any)
and any new skills you learned.

Each blog will be graded as follows:

Mechanics (spelling, length, etc.)
Duties mentioned
Interactions mentioned
Feelings before & after
Challenges (if none, marks will be adjusted accordingly)

Video Assignment
Video Assignment (20%)
While you are out in the community volunteering it is important to reflect on your
experiences. You will become an advocate for the organization you spent 30 hours
with; therefore you will have a greater understanding of the organization than
someone who has never volunteered with them. You will need to keep track of all
the experiences you had, so you can share them at the end of the semester.
I want you to think about this project as a mini commercial featuring you and your
organization. It is only going to be a 2-3 minute video, so make every second count.
Checklist
This assignment is all about creativity. All I ask is you reflect on your positive
experiences in an appropriate manner. I encourage you to use iMovie when making
your video, but if you prefer another application just let me know. You video must be
at least 2 minutes long and not longer than 3 minutes.
Each video will be shown in class, so everyone can get an idea about other
organizations. After all the videos are shown, the class will vote on the top 2 videos,
which will be shown to the entire school so do a good job!
