How to Adopt
Cat Adoptions
AHS has many wonderful homeless pets waiting to be loved. You can even see them online!
A
Our Adoption Counselor can assist you in finding a good match for you. Complete a Meet
Your Match personality profile and find out what color matches your lifestyle and expectations for your new pet and prepare to fall in love!
Kitten Adoptions
Complete a cat adoption profile or dog adoption profile. As part of the adoption, your Counselor will ask for a veterinary reference and landlord approval. If you do not have approval
from your landlord to have the animal where you live, you likely will not be able to adopt
from AAHS since we aim to place pets with owners from day one. Your Adoption Counselor
will review your profile with you and go over how to get your home ready for your new pet.
Preparing ahead for the newest arrival helps your pet feel safe and relaxed as it makes the big
move from shelter to forever home. This includes making sure you have proof that all your
pets are up to date on their rabies shot.
Dog Adoptions
Adopt!
Your Adoption Counselor will work with you to answer any questions you have and will go
over your new pets history and medical information. Youll also pay the adoption fee and
sign the Adoption Agreement, which officially transfers your new pets ownership to you.
Our cats and dogs are fixed, fully vetted, and generally healthy when they leave our care.
AAHS is a resource for you during the entire time you own your new family member. Please
do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions. We know it can be tough to adjust to
a new home, get used to a new litter box, mix with your current pets, among many other
things. Email Adopt@AthensHumaneSociety.org anytime! Email a picture of your new

Services
Seeing or finding a lost pet is a heart breaking experience. We all want to save as many as we
can, but the state of Georgia does not allow us or any rescue to take in non-owned, stray
animals. If you cannot keep them, they must all go to your local animal control:
Athens Animal ControlDogs: 706-613-3540
Athens Animal ControlCats: 706-613-3887
Oconee County Animal ControlDogs and Cats: 706-769-3956
If you want to give a stray the best chance at being adopted or rescued, have them fixed at
our low-cost spay/neuter center and take them to the shelter. This is a big expense of animal
rescues, and your investment will help your stray to be the first one saved!
The Athens Area Humane Society is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit animal welfare agency and,
as such, we are legally prohibited from taking in strays at our facility. More specifically, the
Georgia Department of Agriculture ordinances state that stray animals must be surrendered to
the local municipal animal control facility for intake to allow owners due process to reclaim
their personal property, or pet.
As a state licensed rescue agency, we work closely with area kill shelters that euthanize due to
time/space constraints. Our mission is to reduce the euthanasia rate in our community through
spay neuter and adoption.

Volunteering
Donate!
Volunteers under the age of 18 are not able to officially volunteer, but we encourage groups to
volunteer (such as youth groups, scout groups, etc.) on special projects or put on a food drive
for the AAHS Food Bowl Program. Please contact us for more information or to get a youth
group involved in volunteering.
You can make donations online through our website or by mailing/dropping off a check.
The Athens Area Humane Society is a no-kill organization dedicated to lowering area euthanasia rates through adoption, spay/neuter and pet retention programs. We could not do this work
without the support of volunteers.
Community Service
You can make a difference for the abandoned and homeless pets in our community. Your donation will enable AAHS to provide better care for the animals and to raise awareness about our
mission in the area though adoptions, spay/neuter, and awareness campaigns.
