Introduction
The BitCurator installation covered in this guide will incorporate the virtual machine
installation. In order to successfully install the software, you will need to download
three separate pieces of software:

Oracle VM VirtualBox (along with the extension pack),

7-zip (except for Mac users)

BitCurator

The steps outlined need to be completed in the specific order for BitCurator to be
installed properly.

Step 1: Install Oracle VM VirtualBox

1.1: Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads to get to the VM VirtualBox download
page. For Windows users, click VirtualBox 4.3.14 for Windows Hosts. For Mac users, click
VirtualBox 4.3.14 for OSX hosts.

1.2: Download the VirtualBox 4.3.14 Extension Pack. Click the first option for the
extension pack. When the download is complete, click the installation file to install
VirtualBox onto your computer.

Installing the extension pack

1.3: Open VirtualBox and click Preferences under the File menu.

Under Preferences,

click Extensions.

1.4: Click the Add Package icon

1.5: Navigate to the extension pack file and click Open.

1.6: Click through the installation menu to successfully install the extension pack.

Step 2: Install 7-zip

*Mac users do not need to follow this step.
Go to http://www.7-zip.org/ to download 7-zip. When the download is complete, click the
installation file to install 7-zip onto your computer.

Step 3: Install BitCurator

3.1: Go to http://wiki.bitcurator.net/ to get to the BitCurator download page. Under
Get BitCurator, click BitCurator Virtual Machine.

3.2: After BitCurator has downloaded, open 7-zip. Navigate to the TAR file that has
was downloaded, select it, and click Extract.

3.3: After the file is extracted, a new BitCurator folder will

appear in the 7-zip file menu. Double-click to open the folder.
A new TAR file will show up in the 7-zip file menu.

3.4: Once the second file is extracted, you will see another BitCurator folder. Doubleclick this folder until you see two BitCurator files. When you see these two files,
double-click on the file with the blue box. BitCurator will automatically load into
VirtualBox.
