AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS BURIED IN HARTSHILL CEMETERY FROM THEIR SERVICE RECORDS

ALFRED CLUTTERBUCK
Armidale New South Wales. Joined 24 November 1917 age 22 years 11 months. Occupation
Labourer. Embarked Sydney 18 May 1918. Arrived Liverpool 18 July 1918. France 27 September
1918. Granted leave from 6 June 1919 to 31 October 1919 to take up non-military employment.
Attending S Mear Longton, Staffs possibly employed as Axeman. Admitted War Hospital Stoke 18
June 1919 for operation. Died 6 July 1919 Perforated Gastric Ulcer and Bronchial Pneumonia.
ARTHUR CHARLES MOWBRAY
Port Melbourne Victoria. Joined 12 July 1915 age 22 years 5 months. Occupation Driver. Served in
Mesopotamia. In France by 9 June 1916. Wounded 19 July 1916 Gun Shot wounds to back and leg.
Moved to England 28 July 1916. Stoke War Hospital 29 July 1916. Died of wounds 31 July 1916.
GEORGE THOMAS MURROWOOD
Kew Melbourne Victoria. Joined 10 July 1915 age 19years 6 months. Occupation Bootmaker.
Embarked Melbourne 15 October 1915. Admitted Stoke War Hospital 29 July 1916. Gun Shot wound
Leg amputed because of fear that gangrene would set in. Died 1 August 1916. Originally buried in
grave 5134. Remains exhumed and re-buried in present position indicated by letter to mother dated
19 April 1920. Further letter 23 July 1921 information required for erection of permanent
headstone. Mother received pension of 14 shillings per fortnight.
CHARLES ERNEST WHITE
Nancarrow, Victoria. Joined 30 June 1915 age 22 years 6 months. Occupation Farmer. Left Australia
10 September on route for Mesopotamia. In France by April 1916. Wounded 25 July 1916 Gun Shot
Wound to Back (Spine). Stoke War Hospital 29 July 1916 Paralysis of Lower Limbs. Died 2 August
1916. Height 5 10 12 stone. Blue Eyes Brown Hair Fresh Complexion. A Methodist.
HAROLD GEORGE TARR
Bendigo Victoria. Joined 9 July 1915 age 18 years 3 months. Occupation Salesman. Father George
and Mother Bessie signed their consent for him to join. In Middle East initially. Disembarked
Marseilles 31 Match 1916. Wounded 26 July 1916 Gun Shot Wound Left Arm and Right Thigh. Arm
Septic Acute Septic Absorption. Died Stoke War Hospital 3 August 1916. Originally buried grave
5134.
ANDREW WILSON PETTIGREW
Balmain New South Wales. Joined 1 December 1914 age 21 years 10 months. Occupation
Compositor. Wounded Gallipoli 11 August 1915. Left Gallipoli 29 December 1915. Arrived France 31
March 1916. Wounded 28 July 1916 Gun Shot Wound Leg Gas Gangrene. Stoke War Hospital 29 July
1916. Died 4 August 1916.

FRANK DUFFY
Born Glasgow. Lived Newcastle New South Wales. Joined 27 July 1915 age 29 Occupation Seaman.
Wounded 20 July 1916 Gun Shot Wound left side of Neck. Transferred to England 29 July 1916.
Wrote letter to Aunt in Newcastle (NSW) with whom he had been living on 1 August saying he was
doing alright. Died 7 August 1916. This latter information from a letter 21 October from his Aunt
which also said that his only sister had died whilst he was living with them. However authorities
thereafter corresponded with his sister, Lucy, living in Toronto, Canada. She received a pension of
22/6 a fortnight from 7 October 1916 to 6 November 1918, when she was then able to earn her own
living.
JOHN LEWIS BUTCHER
Born Lawrence New South Wales. Joined 9 September 1915 age 28 years 4 months. Height 5 ft 3 in
Weight 8st 2lb. Occupation Herd Tester. Embarked 31 January 1916. In France 29 May 1916. In Field
10 July 1916. Wounded Gun Shot Wound Left Arm and Chest. Arm amputated halfway between
elbow and shoulder septic on admission to Stoke War Hospital 29 July 1916. Treated with pituitary
extract in groin, Champagne and Brandy. Died of wounds 20 August 1916. Pension granted to
mother 1 12s 6d per fortnight from 31 October 1916.
CANADIAN SOLDIERS BURIED IN HARTSHILL CEMETERY
CHARLES WILLISCRAFT Born 18 February 1888 Eganville Ontario. Another record says
Rockingham Ontario. 42nd Battalion Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment). Died 24 May 1917 age
29. Son of Albert and Amelia Williscraft.
