Unit 1 Categorical Variables (Chps. 2-3)

Big Idea:

Contingency tables and related graphical displays are useful tools for investigating if an association
exists between two categorical variables.

Skills:

Solve basic percent problems Lesson 1

Summarize the distribution of a categorical variable with frequency tables and relative frequency
tables Lesson 2
Create bar graphs, segmented bar graphs, and pie charts for a single categorical variable Lesson 2
Determine the context of a data set from a problem statement (who, what, when, where, why, and
how) Lesson 3a
Determine if a variable is categorical, quantitative, or other (identifier, etc.) Lesson 3a
Organize a contingency (two-way) table Lesson 3b
Calculate percentages from a contingency table Lesson 3b
Identify marginal and conditional distributions in a contingency table Lesson 4
Use appropriate graphs to compare and describe conditional distributions of a categorical variable
over two or more groups Lesson 5
Identify if an association appears to exist between categorical variables Lesson 5
Explain the concept of independence between categorical variables Lesson 5
Identify and explain examples of Simpsons paradox (Warm up)
Explain ways graphs can be misleading or distort data (Warm up)
