B. Abstract:
My EDGE project will be a Polynesian dance review, show casing the different
Polynesian cultures of the different Polynesian students here on campus. As part of
my service I will play a huge role in the creation of the dances and the show all
together. Being of Hawaiian race I am very passionate about sharing my knowledge of
my culture. As the leader of the Hawaiian section, I will be choreographing all the
dances as well as helping in the construction of the Tahitian section. With the help of
other section leaders, we will make costumes, videos, and scenery that reflect our
different cultures. Our performance will be free to students on the first night of
showing and will have other showings for the community at large.
C. Project Details
1.

Explain how the project connects with your personal motivations and career
aspirations.
As a Hawaiian I am very proud to be leading the Hawaiian section of the
concert. This project will allow myself to stay in contact with my culture and
maintain my cultural practices.

2.

Explain how the project ties in with concepts of community engagement.

This show case is very important to the Polynesian students as its our way
to share with others, our Polynesian identity. We only want to make ourselves
more known to our peers on campus, but to those in the community as well. This
show case gives us an opportunity to share with others who we are.

5.

Explain how your personal strengths will help you complete your project.
Personally, my leadership and my passion for my culture is a great asset to
me completing this EDGE project. I have acquired the skills to take on the
responsibilities to make this show a success. I have been blessed to dance hula,
where I was able to learn the ancient ways of my ancestors and become very
active in my Hawaiian culture. With this opportunity to lead the Hawaiian
section of the Polynesian dance review I will be able to resurface my past
teachings and share it with others. The other Polynesian students are very
excited in rehearsing for the show to make it a great one. The leaders and
advisors that are helping in the construction of the show will be there to make
sure that the show will be a success.

6.

Explain how you will overcome your personal weaknesses and outside threats to
complete your project
Unfortunately, because of the shortage of money that the club has and the
costumes and materials needed to perform, it might not be as cultural as it should
be. Also, students who will be involved in the show yet have hard time picking up
the hula dances might effect the ability to complete this project efficiently. We
will try our best to help the dancers learn the dances to make it look as cultural as
it can be. We have already started rehearsals and will continue for about 4
months. We will do some fundraising as a Polynesian club to get more money
that we need for our costumes. I am also thinking about applying for the funding
by the Community Engagement Center. I know the show will be a success, so
long the Polynesian Club works together to do so.
