B. Abstract: In approximately 200 words, provide an overview (or abstract) of your proposed Community
Experiential Education Project.

For my project I will be working with 7 and 8 grade students. I will attend the Canyon
View Middle School 4H Program each week to help the students with their homework. The
majority of the time I will be tutoring them with their math homework but there will be times when I
will tutor other subjects as well. These may include, but are not limited to, science, reading, art,
social studies and core. I will attend Monday through Thursday from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. They do
not ask you to stay for more than one hour a week but I really want to take advantage of this
opportunity and so I asked for their permission to volunteer longer hours each week. I will mostly
be working one-on-one with the students but I do not have a particular student to tutor each day.
This will vary depending on who needs help and who is at the program every day. We will be in a
classroom setting and I will use my knowledge to help them as best as possible. I also think an
important part of my project will simply be building a relationship with the students. I am very
excited to get to know each one of the students and I am happy to have an experience that will
open my eyes to the diversity of personalities in a classroom from a teachers perspective. I am
very excited to be an Academic Mentor!

C. Project Details
1. Explain how the project connects with your personal motivations and career aspirations.
This project relates perfectly to my field of study. Because I am an Elementary Education
major, I am happy to gain any experience working with students. I also think that it will be really
good for me to see the students in a classroom setting.
2. Explain how the project ties in with concepts of community engagement.
I will be helping students within my own community right here in Cedar City. I also think
that it will be a good way for me to learn more about our middle schools. I dont think I have ever
been so excited and passionate about a service project before but I am for this one specifically!
3. Provide a timeline for completion of each step of the project.
I will begin in the fall of 2014; specifically the first week of September. Then I will
complete my project at the end of Fall Semester when school lets out for the middle school on the
week before Christmas.
4. Provide a budget, with projected expenses and revenues, for your project.

This project will not cost me anything more than just giving the students my time and
attention.
5. Explain how your personal strengths will help you complete your project.
I think that my passion for working with kids will be my number one strength in this
project. I absolutely love working with kids of all ages and I love to help them learn because I
hold my education as a top priority. I also think that my level of patience will help me a lot when
the students are having a hard time understanding various concepts.
6. Explain how you will overcome your personal weaknesses and outside threats to complete your
project
I think that one weakness I have is when I dont know the answer to something, I just skip
it because my confidence level is not high enough to trust my first judgment. This will help me to
grow with that and learn how to work through those problems because the students will be
expecting me to know it. I can also ask their teacher for help when I really need to so I know that
I will be giving the student correct information.

For Further Information:

I have previously proposed a project with the Community Engagement Center but I will not be
able to complete that project because it was proposed as a group project with two other students from
SUU and neither of them attend the University anymore. So this is my second proposal and I am very
excited to complete it. I also wanted to mention that I am currently working on it already and have been
going by the dates that I listed above. Thank you!
