GEOMETRY IN THE

REAL WORLD

Haley Ward
3RD Block

POINT
A point is something that marks a certain place like a center
of picture or a tack on a board or anything else that makes a
certain place stand out and it can also give a specific location.
In the picture below the pupil is the point and in the picture
above the thumb tack represents a single point.
1-1-4 if two lines intersect, then they intersect in exactly one
point.

LINE
A line is a straight line that never ends and can be apart of anything with a straight edge.
In this picture the line is the horizon and as you can see its straight and it never ends.
1-1-1 Through any two points there is exactly one line.
3-2-1 Corresponding angles Postulate if two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the
pairs of corresponding angles are congruent.
3-2-2 Alternate Interior Angles Theorem: If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then
the pairs of alternate interior angles are congruent.
3-2-3 Alternate Exterior Angles: If two parallel lines are cut by a transversal, then the two
pairs of alternate exterior angles are congruent.
3-2-4 Same side interior angles theorem: If two parallel lines are cut by a transferal, then
the two pairs of same-side interior angles are supplementary.
3-4-3 If two coplanar lines are perpendicular to the same line, then the two lines are
parallel to each other.

PLANE
A plane is a certain amount of space that things can be in
such as a point.
In this picture the desk is a plane because it is a flat surface.

1-1-2 Through any three noncolliner points there is exactly

one plane containing them.
1-1-5 If two planes intersect then they intersect in exactly one
line.

3-5-1 Parallel Lines Theorem: in a coordinate plane, two non

vertical lines are parallel if and only if they have the same
slope. Any two vertical lines are parallel.

SEGMENT
A segment is a line the has to end points and it is a certain
length.
In the picture above the pencil represents a segment from the
tip to end.
1-2-2 Segment Addition Postulate: if B is between A and C,
then AB+BC=AC

RAY
A ray is a line that has one endpoint and the other side
extends forever.

In the picture above the hands of the clock are segments

because the have a starting or end point and then they a an
arrow which means they extend in the other direction.

COLLINEAR POINTS
Collinear points are points in a straight line.
In the picture above the statues represent collinear points
because they are in a straight line.

ACUTE ANGLE
Are angles that are smaller than 90 degrees
In the picture above the image is under 90 degrees which
makes it a acute angles because acute angles are below 90
degrees.
1-3-2 Angle Addition Postulate: If S is in the interior of <PQR,
Then m<PQS+m<SQR=M<PQR

OBTUSE ANGLE
Angles that are larger than 90 degrees
In the picture above the angle is over 90 degrees.

RIGHT ANGLE
A right angle is an angle that measures 90 degrees.
The image above has angles that measure 90 degrees which
makes them right angles.

1-6-1 Pythagorean Theorem : in a right triangle, the sum of

the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of
the length of the hypotenuse.

PERPENDICULAR ANGLES
Lines that are at right angles (90) to each other.
The Windows above have several lines that are 90 degrees to
each other.

3-5-2 Perpendicular Lines Theorem- In a coordinate plane,

two non vertical lines are perpendicular if and only If the
product of their slopes is -1, vertical and horizontal lines are
perpendicular.

COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES
Angles that add up to be 90 degrees.
There are several angles that add up to 90 degrees in the
above picture.

2-6-4 Congruent Complements theorem: if two angles are complementary to

the same angle (or to two congruent angles), then the two angles are
congruent.

SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES
Angles that add up to 180 degrees.
The poles that run up and down are 180 degrees because they
are straight lines.

2-6-1 Linear Pair Theorem: if two angles form a linear pair, then they are
supplementary.
2-6-2 Congruent supplements Theorem : If two angles are supplementary to
the same angle (or to two congruent angles), then the two angles are
congruent.
4-3-1 triangle sum theorem: The sum of the angle measures of a triangle is
180 degrees.

VERTICAL ANGLES
Vertical angles are a pair of non-adjacent angles formed when two lines
intersect.
Vertical angle Theorem: Vertical angles are congruent.

The scissors form vertical angles.

ACUTE TRIANGLES
In an obtuse triangle, one angle is greater than a right angleit is more than
90 degrees. An obtuse triangle may be isosceles or scalene. In an acute
triangle, all angles are less than right angleseach one is less than 90
degrees. An acute triangle may be equilateral, isosceles, or scalene. All
angles in the above picture are less then 90 degrees.
4-3-2 The acute angles of a right triangle are complementary.

OBTUSE TRIANGLE
The indicated angle is larger than 90 degrees. Both triangles are obtuse
because they contain an angle greater than 90 degrees. No matter where in
the triangle that angle is, as long as it's greater than 90 degrees, the triangle
containing it is obtuse. The point at the top of the white house forms a obtuse
triangle.

EQUILATERAL TRIANGLES
An equilateral triangle is a triangle in which all three sides are equal. In
traditional or Euclidean geometry, equilateral triangles are also equiangular;
that is, all three internal angles are also congruent to each other and are
each 60. All angles are 60 degrees in the below picture.

4-9-3 If a triangle is equilateral, then it is equiangular.

4-9-4 If a triangle is equiangular, then it is equilateral.

ISOSCELES TRIANGLES
An isosceles triangle is a triangle that has two sides of equal length.
Sometimes it is specified as having two and only two sides of equal length,
and sometimes as having at least two sides of equal length, the latter version
thus including the equilateral triangle as a special case. In the picture below
two of the bottom angles are congruent.
4-9-1 Isosceles Triangle Theorem : If two sides of a triangle are congruent,
then the angles opposite the sides are congruent.

SCALENE TRIANGLES
A scalene triangle is a triangle that has three unequal sides. None of the
angles are the same in the picture below.
5-1-3 Angle Bisector Theorem: If a point is on the bisector of an angle, then
it is equidistant from the sides of the angle.

RIGHT TRIANGLE
An angle with a 90 degree. The boat and the light house made a 90 degree
triangle. All right angles are congruent.
2-6-3 Right angle Congruence theorem : all right angles are congruent.

2-7-3 If two congruent angles are supplementary, then each angle is a right
angle.
8-1-1 The altitude to the hypotenuse of a right triangle forms two triangles
that are similar to each other and to the original triangle.

SOHCAHTOA- You can use this to find the missing measure.

CIRCLES
Definitions and formulas for the radius of a circle, the diameter of a circle, the
circumference (perimeter) of a circle, the area of a circle, the chord of a
circle, arc and the arc length of a circle, sector and the area of the sector of a
circle. The picture below shows the center of the circle, the radius.
