BACKGROUND
Cigarette smoking is a habit that is difficult to break and is primarily
the root of cancer mortality. It has tobacco in it which contains an
addictive substance called alkaloid nicotine. There were more
cigarette smokers in younger age groups than in elders and there are
over 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes and 51 of them are known to be
carcinogenic. Throat cancer specifically in the larynx, is one of the
probable cancer caused by smoking. Notably, laryngitis is a
common problem among smokers. E-cigs do not have the harmful
tars that regular commercial cigarettes do contain but unfortunately
they might have other harmful chemical ingredients included as well
like the diethylene glycol.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
In this study, white mice were used as the experimental animals.
The histology conducted on white mice larynx after smoke and
vapor treatment from commercial cigarettes and e-cigarettes will
cause changes in their larynxes.
This study will give people a sense of awareness, advocacy and some
coherent information about the effects of commercial cigarettes and
e-cigarettes, particularly the latter since its not yet fully studied.

RESEARCH PARADIGM

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND

HYPOTHESIS
1. What are the effects of the cigarettes to the
histological characteristics of larynx of white mice?
2. Are there significant differences between the
effects of the commercial cigarettes and the ecigarettes?
Hypothesis: 1. There are no significant difference in
the effects of commercial cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

DELIMITATION
This study focuses on the histological effects of commercial
cigarette and e-cigarette on the larynx of white mice. This
study uses 27 1-month old white mice. This were divided into
three (3) groups consisted of nine (9) mice. Setup A served as
the control, Setup B exposed to commercial cigarette smoke
and Setup C exposed to e-cigarette vapor. This will be
conducted for 37 days. The dissection of the white mice will
be done in the Rizal Hall, Room 106 at West Visayas State
University while the tissue processing will be done at the
SEAFDEC, by the Microtechnique Department.
