Recommendations

Overthecourseoffourweeks,oureleventhgradeteamcametoseveralvarying
conclusionsregardingthefateofHighTechHighNorthCountyVillagesnonexistentphysical
educationprogram.Basedonourexperimentalstudy,surveys,andthemanyinterviewsthatwe
drafted,wediscoveredthattherearemanydifferentopinionsonhowHTHNCshouldapproach
physicaleducationinourschool.Wenarroweddowntheseproposalstocreatethreebase
recommendations,describedbelow.
1. PhysicalActivityisthestudentsresponsibility.
Asitishardtoincorporateaphysicaleducationclassintoouralreadybusyschoolday,
ourfirstrecommendationistoleaveituptothestudentstoparticipateinphysicalactivity
throughouttheschoolday.
HighSchool:
Ashighschoolstudents,itisourresponsibilitytotakecontrolofourstateofhealth.This
proposalwouldrequirehighschoolstudentstoprovideproofthattheyareexercising60minutes
ofexerciseatleastthreedaysaweek(betweenMondayandFriday).Toensureoptimaluseof
time,studentswouldgetsuggestionsatschoolonthevariouswaysonecancompleteexercise
withoutleavingthehouseorspendingmoney.Thismethodisfast,cheap,andrequiresminimal
administrativeengagement,makingitaneasychoiceforstudentsandteachersalike.
MiddleSchool:
Formost,middleschoolisatimetolearnaccountability,makingthistheperfect
opportunityforstudentstofigureouthowtohandletheirhealthandschoolwork.The
frameworkwouldbeverysimilarforthemiddleschool,exceptduringadvisory,whichisdaily

studentswouldreceiveguidanceonvarioustypesofphysicalactivitytheycancomplete,oreven
havethetimetoexercisewithclassmates.
ElementarySchool:
Withtheelementaryschool,studentswouldneeddirectionfromtheirteachersand
parents.Currently,theelementaryschoolhasrecesstimebeforelunch.Withthisoption,students
wouldhaveaclassforatleast30minuteseachdaywheretheylearnhowtoplayvarioussports.
Eachmonth,studentscouldfocusononesport.Throughthisprogram,studentscandiscover
whichsportstheyareinterestedin,andhopefullypursuethemoutsideofschool.
2. ArequiredPhysicalEducationclass.
ThedatacollectedstronglyleanedtowardsrequiringaP.E.classforeverystudent.72%
ofHTHNCstudentsstatedtheywouldparticipateinaP.E.classinasurvey.Whileitmayseem
unreasonabletoshortencorecurriculumclasses,aP.E.classcouldbebeneficialinthelongrun
asitcanhelpstudentsreleasebuiltupenergyandcanthenbecomemoreengagedinacademics.
HighandMiddleSchool:
Werecommendthatthisclassbe60minuteslongandoccurthreedaysoutoftheweek.
Inaddition,theclasswouldnotonlyconsistofrunning,pushups,andotheraerobicexercises,
butanutritionalcomponenttoencouragehealthyeatinghabitsandmakestudentsawareofwhat
theyeat.Toreducestressandboostmentalhealth,studentswouldgatheronceaweekfora
3045minuteperiodtodiscusstheeffectsofvariousmentalillnesses,howtopreventthem,and
whyhavingahealthydietisimportant.Bothclasseswouldbetaughtbyaprofessionallytrained
instructorwhohashadexperienceinfitnessandnutritionortwoinstructorswhospecializein
either.

ElementarySchool:
Foryoungerstudents,astructuredhourlongphysicaleducationclassmightbetoo
exhausting,thereforewerecommend30minutesofanorganizedP.E.classand3045minutesof
recessorfreetimeatalaterhour.Duringthisthirtyminutesofstructuredphysicaleducation,
theyoungerstudentswouldlearnnewexercises,stretchesorsportstodoontheirowntime,
maybeevenduringtheirfreerecessperiod.Recesswouldtakeplaceatadifferenttimethanthe
structuredclass,astooTheelementaryschools30minutephysicaleducationwouldalsobe
directedbyanexpertinathletics,morethanlikelyaparentvolunteeroracademiccoach.
3. ImplementationofElectives.
HighandMiddleSchool:
Currently,HTHNCoffersaclassknownasElective.This45minuteperiodisarequired
extracurricularclasschosenbystudentssothattheycaneitherparticipateinextraartistic,
academicorathleticendeavours.HTMNCalsooffersElectives,butinadifferentmanner.The
middleschoolhasstudentsenrolledintwoelectiveseachweekrequiringatleastoneofthetwo
besomehowrelatedtophysicalactivity.Thisphysicalactivitycouldbeasportlikesoccer,
tennisorbasketball,ornoncompetitiveathleticactivitieslikeyogaordance.Studentscanget
theirphysicalactivitytakencareofatschoolwithouthavingtotakeawayfromtimefor
academics.Withthisoption,studentswillhaveachoiceinhowtheyaregettingtheirdaily
exercisewhilestillhavingtheopportunitytobeapartofacademicclubslikeYearbookand
ModelUnitedNations.
ElementarySchool:

HTeNCdoesnothaveElectives,insteadtheyhaveExploratory.Threetimesaweek,
studentstakeeitherscience,engineering,orartclass.Thisclassisrotatedeachtrimester.We
suggestthatonthetwodayswhereExploratoryisnotpresent,studentsparticipateinanElective
oftheirchoice.Eachteachercouldhosttheirownsport/athleticactivityandthestudentscould
choosewhichonetoparticipatein.
Inorderforallofthepreviouslystatedideastobesuccessful,weadvisethattheyfollow
theguidelinesofaComprehensiveSchoolPhysicalActivityProgram(CSPAP).TheCenterfor
DiseaseControlPrevention(CDC)(2013)statestherearefourmaincomponentsofquality
physicaleducation:OpportunitytoLearn,AppropriateInstruction,MeaningfulContent,
andStudentProgramandAssessment.
OpportunitytoLearn:
Toensurethatallstudentshaveanequalchanceatimprovingtheirphysicaleducation,
thesizeofaP.E.classshouldbeconsistentwiththatofacorecurricularclass.
AppropriateInstruction:
ForaP.E.period,50%oftheclassshouldbespentmoving.Itisalsosuggestedthat
lessonsarecreatedforeachday,andassessmentsareregularlyconductedtomonitorstudent
improvement.
MeaningfulContent:
Aplannedcurriculumforeachgradeshouldbeinplacewithproperinstructiononhowto
developvariousmotorskills.
StudentProgramandAssessment:
Assessments,ifused,shouldbeinunisonwiththestatestandards.

Eachoftheseplanscanbeslightlymodifiedoradjustedtobetterfittheschoolscurrent
budgetandschedule.Allthattrulymattersisimplementingmorephysicalactivityinordertoget
studentsupandactiveatschool.
