Research
Interview
As it is required to interview a person working in an industry and position that interests me. A
meeting was organized with Mr. Dheya Jalal on 28th of October for an interview to get full
information about his job in order to understand the nature of that job; he is an engineer at
Aluminum Bahrain (ALBA) ; the interview was done at one of the coffee shops. Different question
were asked to him about his educational achievement and life experience .
Firstly, I asked him about his bachelor degree and he said that he has a Marine Engineering BSC at
Southampton Solent University in UK, and a BSC in Mechatronics Engineering at AMA University in
Bahrain. Secondly, I asked about any further studies that were taken after the bachelor degree and
the answer was that a Master degree in human recourse was taken at DePaul university in USA. The
third question was about the training and qualifications that he has, and it was found that he has an
experience of 8 years At United Arab Shipping Company and working at Aluminum Bahrain (Alba)
since 14 years and so far and moreover he worked as a tutor at AMA university for 5 years.
The main question was about his job exactly and his responsibilities at Alba, so he is a safety
instructor now in training department as he was a safety coordinator in health, safety and
environment department last year, so the main things are:
Induction courses to employees entering the company.
Safety awareness
Environmental awareness
Occupational health awareness
General & specific SHE Courses
Training administration
Employees long term studies tracking.
Another question about the reason of wanting this job, and he replayed that this job is interesting
and it matches his qualification. Moreover, he was asked about the required skills to get this job and
he said that having presentation skills, delivering topics skills, leadership skills and understanding
audience are important to get similar job, as well as being good listener and fluent in English.
Moreover, he was enquired about the thing that motivates him to work everyday, it was people's
respect and appreciation, the achievement after each course or session of awareness that is given to
employees, as well as learning new things everyday and touching the difference by making some
better changes in the working environments. In addition to this, I asked about the problem that is
faced in work; he answered that the three main problems were lack of professionalism, attitude
issue and lots of changes in work. By being an engineer in a big company in Bahrain, stress and
pressure are usually faced, so another question was about how to handle with them and the answer
was by keeping calm during work, thinking positively and conducting risk management methods.
Furthermore, I asked him about things he like or dislike about his job, and I found that he likes the
challenges everyday and friendship but he doesnt like some negative attitudes there.

Finally, I was asking about what he is looking for in his next position and the future goals; it was
stability at work as he is working in diversity at the company between two different departments. At
the end of the interview, I was interested to have an advice to get a similar job, he told me three
main things to reach the same position and these were controlling emotion, being patient and
seeking the good things and opportunities.

Research
A research was done about the common requirements, responsibilities and skills of being a safety
coordinator.
The general requirements are:
- Associates, bachelors or masters degree level.
- Degree fields are safety management, occupational health and safety, environmental safety
or engineering.
- Optional Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) licensure and trainer
certification.
- An experience of a minimum of five years

The responsibilities are:
- Keeping and ensuring the safety in the workplace.
- Accident investigations when any accident happens in the workplace.
- Training employees in workplace safety.
- Supervise employees and facilities to ensure following the workplace-safety practices and
regulations.
- Using protective or safety equipment to prevent injuries.
- Documenting any safety-related training, accident reports and anything related and stored
properly.
- Ability to be on call in case of emergencies or accidents.

Analysis
According to my research, it was found that the information that were provided by the engineer I did
the interview with are mostly similar to the information I got from my own research.
For the requirements to get that job, it was mentioned in the research that the person who has a
bachelor degree in engineering could work as safety coordinator and this matches with the
interview. Another thing is that he do some of the responsibilities that are mentioned in research, as
he doesnt document things, do accident investigation and preserve and ensure workplace safety;
the reason behind that is because he works with the training department in ALBA which let him to
focus on ensuring that the employee has the full awareness in health, environment and safety.
One serious difficulty that was not mentioned in the interview is to be on call if any accident occurs
or emergency as sometimes we might have something else important that we cant be there when
they asked us to be.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I think that I am suitable to be a safety coordinator as it is a very important job in each
company because the safety of employee is on the first stage as well as the safety of the workplace,
and by following the rules of safety, all the accidents and injuries are preventable. As a mechanical
engineering student in my third year, I think that my bachelor degree will help me to get a similar job
as I need to have some courses in health, safety and environment. OSHA licensure gives the chance
to get the job also due to its importance.
Experience plays a major role in working as a safety coordinator, but the knowledge and skills helps
too as I think that I have a good skills including communications skills, problem solving, computer
skills, recording details and thinking outside the box which helps in reducing accidents and injuries in
different ways . Some of my skills needs to be improved such as public speaking to be fully qualified
for this job. Finally, I think that by being interested in a anything, we can be creative enough to be
excellent in it.
