Happy milk

Sir,
The modern pressures, including climate change, on our
countryside mean that even more cows may need to be kept
indoors (report and letters, Jan 10).
The erosion of wildlife habitat by intensive, species-poor
pasture leys required for high (milk) yielding cattle, the
compaction of soil by cows being kept out longer on
waterlogged fields and the push for farmers to improve biosecurity by keeping livestock away from badgers carrying
bovine TB could all result in more housed livestock.
