Computer Engineer
Job Description
A computer engineer, also
known as a software engineer,
is responsible for developing,
testing and evaluating the software that makes computers
work. They also help in the
development of new computer
games, business applications,
and new operating systems. A
computer engineer is also commonly in charge of constructing and managing a companys
computer system and giving
technical support to those who
need it within the company. A
computer engineer typically
works in an office or laboratory environment as part of a
team and has a normal, full
time, work schedule.

Job outlook
The job outlook for
computer engineering
is about 7% according to the U.S bureau
of labor statistics.
This is a bit slower
than average, however computer engineering is a medium
sized field so there
are a sizable amount
of jobs out there.

Education
In order to become a computer
engineer you will need at least a
bachelors degree in the field,
according the U.S. Bureau of
labor statistics. However, some
computer engineers have a
bachelors degree in software
engineering instead of computer engineering, hence the name
of software engineers. Lastly,
as the field of technology is
constantly advancing and
changing a successful computer engineer new completely
stops learning and is constantly
on top of the new technology
and techniques that are coming
out.

Work Environment
A computer engineer can work
in a few different locations.
The first and most common
are with companies that manufacture certain parts for electronics. There the engineers
work in either a research laboratory where they will fabricate
new ideas about how to further
improve or redesign their employers current product. If the

laboratory then he or she will
be stationed within the manufacturing plant itself in order to
test the quality of the parts
being made an monitor the
computer systems within the
building. Computer Engineers
also work within firms and for
large companies with a large
demand for complicated com-

puter systems. In the firms


they are outsourced in order to
help set up or create computer
systems for other companies.
Lastly if they are positioned in
a large company with complicated computational demands
then they are in charge of
monitoring and upgrading the
current system which they
have.

Choice of Career
I chose this career for several
reasons. The largest factor to
my choosing of this career is
the fact that I enjoy tinkering
with pieces of technical equipment. Which is a major part of
a computer engineers day. I
also enjoy problem solving
when it is related to computers
and other things like that. Lastly, the median salary of a
computer engineer is pretty
good as well.

The Major
In order to become a computer
engineer you must have at least
a bachelors degree in the field
of computer engineering. One
of the schools that offer the
degree of computer engineering is Clemson University. At
Clemson University the Major
is called Computer Engineering
and the degree itself is a bachelors degree. However, in order

to attend Clemson, during high


school you must pass at least 4
years of English, 3 years of
history/ social studies, 2 years
of a language, 3 years of math,
and 3 years of a science course.

Salary
The median salary for a computer engineer in the united
states is $100,920.
