Letter From The Directors

Dear Auditioner,
We are so excited that you have decided to take the opportunity to try out
for a position in one of the most extraordinary musicals ever written. Whether
you are a seasoned performer or a first time participant, we welcome you.
Both Elaine and I were part of this musical way back in 1980 and it has
been a dream of ours to be a part of this show once again. MLT has graciously
given us that opportunity. Its a fun show with lots of energy and great music, not
to mention the timeless principles of the content of the show.
This musical requires a high level of commitment, both to the show and to
your fellow actors/actresses. Please give thoughtful consideration to your job
and personal commitments and responsibilities. Everyone is on stage pretty
much the whole time, so missing a practice becomes very problematic. You will
be required to spend time outside of practices learning and memorizing songs
and dialogue. This is extremely important to make practices efficient and
productive and the show a great success.
Now a little about the auditions. Auditions can be stressful and intimidating.
Dont let that hold you back from giving it your all. Dont worry about messing up,
stumbling over words or missing notes. Thats not what Im looking for. I may
ask you to sing or act something over again. This is not a reflection on your
performance. I may give instruction and see how well those instructions are
implemented. Im looking for strong vocals and energy. Im looking for continuity
and spontaneity. Im looking for a group of ten people that can become a
community. So step up with confidence and give it your best shot.

Show History & Synopsis

Godspell is a musical by Stephen Schwartz and a book by John-Michael
Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various
touring companies and revivals many times since, including a 2011 revival which
played on Broadway from October 13, 2011, to June 24, 2012. Several cast
albums have been released over the years and one of its songs, "Day by Day"
from the original cast album, reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in
the summer of 1972.
The musical uses a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of
Matthew (three of the featured parables are recorded only in the Gospel of Luke)
to explain the teachings of Jesus. The parables are interspersed with a variety of
modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. The second act
concentrates more on the last supper and crucifixion of Jesus and ends with a
group of individuals transformed into a community dedicated to follow Jesus.
It started as a college project performed by students at Carnegie Mellon
University and moved to LaMaMa Experimental Theatre Club in Greenwich
Village. It was then re-scored for an off-Broadway production which became a
long-running success.
