Blog Entry 3: Differentiating Instruction through Technology

Applying technology in classroom lessons is the ability to differentiate instruction to
meet every students needs in a classroom environment. Students develop at various rates, they
also learn in multiple ways and a variety of speeds. Assisting each student in their own learning
style ensures achievement for every learner. Teachers must be aware of the different learning
styles for every student to succeed in school. Applying technology in classroom lessons allows
each student to learn at their appropriate academic level and excel in the appropriate learning
styles.
Technology provides a number of support for all the different types of learning. The
different learning types are people who obtain and process information. Digital media tools
allow students to have learning experiences in which concepts ae brought to life with a variety of
representations-videos, sounds, colors, pictures, simulations, and animations (Gunter, Gunter, p
220, 2014). For example, using digital media in the classroom allows students to visualize in
motion rather than just looking at pictures by using virtual tours. Virtual tours allows students to
take trips right from a computer screen and brings the images to life. Integrating educational
software benefits children by encouraging to think by words, images, colors, and sounds when
processing information (Gunter, Gunter 2014). Using smart boards in the classroom is becoming
popular among educators. A smart board allows teachers to project images from a computer onto
the smart board, where teachers and students to can interact playing games, writing numbers,
shapes, science, or reading. Examples of smart boards usage for the classroom are endless.

Another type of technology to use in the classroom to help students with learning, are smart
tables. Smart table is a multi-touch, multi-user interactive learning center (Gunter, Gunter p
235, 2014). This type of table encourages students to work together in small groups performing
small tasks such as playing educational games, stories, or computer based lessons. By engaging
students in different ways, technology encourages them to take a more active role in the learning
process (Gunter, Gunter p 216, 2014). Technology brings endless possibilities to a classroom to
enrich students curriculum and understanding.
Using technology to differentiate lessons has benefits as well as some drawbacks.
Research shows children who are visual learners, listening learners, or task tile learners can
benefit from using technology while learning. Computers when placed in the hands of students
and teachers, provide unique, effective, and powerful opportunities for many different types of
teaching (Gunter, Gunter p 213, 2014). Computer technology contains a number of resources to
help all students learn. As much as using technology in the classroom is beneficial, not all
schools or teachers have the funding or knowledge to use technology as part of a lesson. The
lack of teacher training, security blockage of websites that may be helpful for students learning,
not enough planning time for teachers, and budget restraints are many reasons why differentiate
instruction is not entirely possible (Gunter, Gunter, 2014). In order for educators to use all
resources that are available for differentiating instruction, teachers must have the support.
Technology in the classroom helps all students perform in all academic areas. The ability
to differentiate instruction for students in a classroom can be a difficult task, but with technology
advancements, this is becoming easier to accomplish.
