Objectives - Chapter 1

Be able to explain what is meant by the terms matter, property, elements, compounds, and molecules
Be able to classify the states of matter and changes of state
Be able to distinguish between pure substances and mixtures.
Be able to distinguish between a physical and a chemical properties and changes
Be able to distinguish between an extensive and an intensive property
Be able to correctly identify the number of significant figures in a number. If it is ambiguous be able to
explain why it is ambiguous
Be able to give the answer to a calculation involving addition and/or subtraction to the proper number of
significant figures
Be able to give the answer to a calculation involving multiplication and/or division to the proper number
of significant figures
Be able to interconvert temperatures in Celsius and Kelvin
