Subject- Verb Agreement Part 2 / 10-7-2014

Established Goals (Include ACOS standards in this section): Demonstrate command of the
conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. [L.7.1]
a. Demonstrate knowledge of subject-verb agreement when interrupted by a prepositional phrase, with inverted
word order, with indefinite pronouns as subjects, compound subjects joined by correlative and coordinating
conjunctions, and collective nouns when verb form depends on the rest of the sentence. (Alabama)
Understandings (Students will understand that ): Indefinite pronouns as subjects
can be singular or plural (singular- each, either, neither, one, everyone, everybody, no one,
nobody, anyone, anybody, someone, somebody; plural- both, few, several, many; singular
or plural- Some, all, any, most, none).
Essential Knowledge (Students will know ): indefinite pronouns
Essential Skills (Students will be able to ):
the correct verb to go with indefinite pronouns.

Identify indefinite pronouns, Determine

Essential Question(s): What are indefinite pronouns? Which indefinite pronouns are
singular and which are plural in subject form?
Stage 2 Assessment Evidence
Performance Task(s):

N/A

Other Evidence: Formative assessment will be used throughout the lesson as the teacher
calls on and looks over the students work. The homework activity will be used as
summative assessment of this lesson.
Stage 3 Learning Plan (Include approximate time for each activity in the learning plan)
Materials needed for the lesson: Teacher: computer, Internet access, projector,
handouts and assignments loaded to Blackboard prior to class. Students: Computers,
Internet access
Bell ringer (if one is used): What is an indefinite pronoun? Research and write a
sentence or two (can be done on computer) explaining the research and answering the
question. A few students will then share what they found. Answer: An indefinite pronoun
refers to a non-specific person or thing.

Review of relevant, previously learned information: Ask for example sentences aloud
of singular subjects with singular verbs and plural subjects with plural verbs. (1 minute)
Introductory Activity: Allow students to complete the paragraph activity that should be
loaded to Blackboard prior to class. Read aloud to the class first. They will then read
through the paragraph and underline on the document the words they believe are indefinite
pronouns (revisit definition, give example- someone, anybody). After finishing, students will
share their answers, and they will be discussed in class. (7 minutes)
Body of the lesson: Introduce indefinite pronouns in the handout on the projector. Explain
singular, plural, and singular or plural forms of indefinite pronouns.
Students will complete activity one in Blackboard, choosing whether the subject is singular
or plural then choosing the correct verb to go with each indefinite pronoun. As they work,
the teacher will use formative assessment by walking to each student and assessing their
work. (Accommodation: Students who need larger font can enlarge the font via their
computers. Students who need text to be read aloud can highlight the sentences and have
the computer read the text to them as well as the teacher helping them.) (10 minutes)
In their groups, students will read through the sentences one by one and each person in the
group will share their answer after the question is read. They will discuss why they chose
their answers and choose as a group what they believe to be the correct answer. At this
time, both teachers will visit each group assessing their answers. (5 minutes)
The teacher will then go through the sentences and the groups will tell their answers after
each sentence is read. At this time, the teacher will review any incorrect answers and
explain the correct answers. (7 minutes)
The students will then play a game involving indefinite pronouns. Each group will be a team
and designate one person to be the writer and deliverer of the answer. The teacher will
show one sentence on the projector at a time. The team will then discuss briefly and bring
their answer to the teacher. The team with the most correct answers at the end of the game
will win a prize (candy). (9 minutes)
Preview of the next lesson:

N/A

Related out of class assignment: Write a paragraph on the topic of your choice (for
example: favorite hobby, sport, or food) and post it on the discussion board in Blackboard.
This paragraph must contain four sentences with indefinite pronouns as the subject. (1
minute to explain)
Description of co-teaching strategy used in this lesson. If co-teaching was part of
this lesson, describe: co-teaching model used, how and why this particular
strategy was employed, role (lead teacher/secondary teacher), and details of the
implementation of the co-teaching model.

ProjectorHandout:When an indefinite pronoun is used as a subject, the verb must agree with it. Indefinite

pronouns fall into the three following groups:

Always Singular
Each, everyone, nobody, anything, either, everybody, nothing, someone, neither, everything, anyone, somebody,
one, no one, anybody, something
Always Plural
Several, few, both, many
Singular or Plural
Some, all, any, most, none
Singular indefinite pronouns need singular verbs, and plural indefinite pronouns need plural verbs.
Example 1: Each is to blame.

Example 2: Several of the kids are playing in the sandbox.

If the indefinite pronoun is one of the above that can be singular or plural, you need to take note of the noun
or nouns it refers to; if the nouns referenced are singular, then the verb will be singular. If the nouns
referenced are plural, then the verb will be plural.
Example 1: Some of the cake is eaten.
Example 2: Some of the people are voting for the more conservative candidate.

Activity One: Instructions: Choose whether each subject is singular or plural then identify the correct verb
by underlining the text.
