slope=

y rise

2. When an equation is in slope-intercept form y=mx+b, the slope is m and the y-intercept is b.
3. When an equation is in standard form Ax + By = C, the slope is

4. To re-write an equation is slope-intercept form, solve for y.
5. To graph a linear equation in slope-intercept form, plot the y-intercept then use the slope,

, to find the next and/or previous points.

6. To graph an equation in Standard format, you can find and plot the x-intercept by substituting
0 for y and solving for x, then find and plot the y-intercept by substituting 0 for x and solving for
y.

Chapter 5 Solving and Graphing Inequalities

REMINDERS:
Solve inequalities exactly the same way (D.C.I.D.) you solve equalities EXCEPT when you
multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, you have to reverse the inequality sign.
Inequalities with one variable are graphed on a number line. Inequalities with two variables
are graphed on a coordinate plane.
Graph linear inequalities exactly the same way you graph linear equalities EXCEPT use a
dashed line for < or > because the boundary is NOT included, and shade above the line for

y >

and below the line for

y <

Solve the inequality, if possible. Graph your solution.

Chapter 6 Solving Systems of Linear Equalities

REMINDERS:
Given a system of 2 linear equations with the same two variables, the solution is the point (x, y)
where the two lines intersect. You learned 3 ways to solve a system of equations:
1. Graph the two lines and find the point where they intersect.
2. Use substitution replace the x or y in one of the equations with what that variable is equal
to in the other. This is the best method when one of the equations is already solved for one of
the variables, such as problems 57 and 60 below.
3. Elimination get rid of one of the variables by combining (adding or subtracting) the two
equations. The coefficients of one of the variables must match up or be multiplied to
match up.
Use the method of your choice to solve the linear system.
