Hello Nestucca River Steelhead Anglers,
Winter steelhead season is upon us once again. As many of you know our production of wild stock winter steelhead here at Cedar Creek Hatchery has been increased from 70,000 to 100,000 smolts starting with this winters production. This increase is a result of the approval of the Coastal Multi Species Plan. Fortunately, with the change to holding the wild brood fish in Pond 6 as opposed to the Canadian Troughs our survival has been outstanding. This increase will not require many additional fish to be collected but we will need a few more than past years to meet egg take goals. Our goal for the season will be to spawn 45 pair of wild fish so we should look toward collecting 50 pair total to account for spawned out fish or fish that will not spawn. To date (01/15/15) we have collected 13 males and 10 females and we are on track for our collection goal. We are very pleased to see such great involvement this early in the season and encourage everyone to continue bringing in fish until you are notified otherwise. If you are not already signed up please be sure and get your paperwork completed and turned into Ron Rehn at the Tillamook District office or we can deliver it to him. Please contact us here at the hatchery if you need a live box for your boat. Just a reminder to anyone who has yet to bring in a fish this season the fish will be held in Pond 6 (the adult holding pond over the hill from the office) once again. If you have any questions feel free to contact Whitney, Lawrence or myself here at the hatchery (503) 392-3485 or you can reach me my cell at (503) 801-0592 any time. Sincerely, Joe Hulburt
