Droopnath Ramphul State College

Mauritius is a tiny yet heaven-like island in the Indian Ocean. A
multi-racial country yet unity is the strength in Mauritian family!
Droopnath Ramphul State College, from a small secondary school to
now a national college has become one of the rare institutions of the
North of the country, fully geared for teaching, learning and
communicating. The school leaves no stone unturned in educating its
students, in sensitizing them about life and the world issues and in
bringing out the talent in them.
We, the ENLIGHTERS, with this initiative of recycling have contributed
in part of its success; protecting the school, protecting the environment.
It just takes a pebble in the water to make a wave!

Total Quality Management (TQM)

Total quality development comprises material,

human and spiritual growth of a student. This
is possible through quality education or
education with a purpose. Students should be
trained to work for human welfare and
constantly improve the quality of life in the
world. Such students will invariably be free of
prejudices of race or caste and become world
citizens, gifts of God to mankind and a pride of
the human race.
The CMS Founder-Manager, Shri Jagdish Gandhi

Interview with Mrs. Seeburun

Re-use of fabrics
What exactly is your idea? What will be done in
it?
The Textile Department and I have currently thought
to set up a School Enterprise Challenge (SEC). We
can take fabrics and manufacture basic things which
are used in everyday life. Then these products will
be sold at the seat of the school.
Where will you get the fabrics for your
project?
The fabrics will be from the students, teachers and
staff. They will have to be used fabrics; which usually
make a mess at home. Instead of throwing them, we
have thought of making useful products out of them.
What are the products that you have planned
to make with these fabrics?
In the beginning, we thought only of wall hangings
but when we saw that the response was good, we
decided to diversify and now weve come to a point
where we will be able to make shopping bags of all
sizes, mobile pouch, cosmetic pouch, diary pouch.
These are products which will be made on the
request of the students.

What is the aim of the SEC?

Its main aim is to sensitise students about recycling;
instead of throwing, we can re-use. Another aim is
to inculcate business skills in students. We are
also thinking of involving commissions for the
students who will make the products and also for
those who will sell them. Therefore, encouraging
them to work on this project.
How have you let other people know about
your project?
Initially it was mainly an ear to ear process, but
seeing the great demand, we decided to create a
blog where our products, to be sold, will be
advertised. Actually, the blog has not been opened
to the public, but as soon as we start with the
project, the blog will be operational. Furthermore,
the blog has been designed totally on students
preferences.
When will you be meeting the students?
Normally, it should be during the activity period and
lunch break; but the rector told us to take free
classes to work on the project, so as to have each
students involved in the project.

Having planned our Activities to inculcate

Green Culture in our students, we moved
ahead to Go green and thus encourage
both students and teachers to invest
themselves in Recycling which on a long

Step 1
Reuse

of Fabrics

Unwanted scraps of
fabrics were reused
to make household
decorative items.

Other materials
such
as
buttons,
braids, trims and
threads were also re
used.

Implementation
Step1
Main Objectives:

1. To sensitise students
on the importance of
preserving the
environment.
2. To increase students
awareness on the
reuse of unwanted
scraps of fabrics so
as to reduce wastes.

Implementation
Step 2
Spreading the word:

A blog was created

Posters about our activities
were made
Pictures were uploaded
Comments from students is
also possible
Within no time, the entire
locality was made aware of the
project going on in our school.

participated was
organized and the

Step2
This
was to sensitize
everyone, even small
children on how to
preserve this little heaven
of ours.
Residence of Calebasses
were offered plants which
they happily accepted.
We made elders
conscious about our planet
and how they should give a
helping hand to reduce
pollution especially through
recycling.

To eliminate
weeds , we decided
not to use
pesticides but
instead to carry
out composting
