Plurals crossword
‘Use this activity after Lesson 2.3 Ex. 8¢ on page 21.
Procedure
‘Ss work in pairs. Give each pair a copy of the activity
Ask Ss to look at sentence 1 across, Tell them that the
letters in bold can be rearranged to make a word, What
do they think this word is? (Give them a clue: itis a
‘member of the family). When they identify the word niece,
ask them what they must do to the word to make it fit
in the sentence (.e., they must make it plural = nieces)
They write this word on the crossword grid.
Working in pairs, Ss then try to complete the rest of the
crossword, making words out of the jumbled letters, and
then making these words plural.

Guess the plurals
Target language: noun plurals
‘Activity type: half a crossword
When to use: Use this activity after Lesson 2.3,
Time: 15 minutes
Preparation: Photocopy and cut up one worksheet for each pair of students.
Procedure
Put students into pairs. Give half the pairs a Student A worksheet, and the other half a
‘Student B worksheet. Tell students to check with their partners that they understand and
can explain all the words on their crosswords.
When they are ready, rearrange the class so that a Student A works with a Student B, Tell
students not to show their worksheets to each other.
Preteach how to ask What's 4 across? or What's 1 down? Students now help each other to
complete their crosswords by describing the words they have without saying the words.

When to use: Use this activity after Lesson 2.2.
Time taken: 15 minutes
Preparation: Photocopy and cut up one worksheet for each pair of students in the class.
Procedure
Put students into pairs. Give a Student A worksheet to one student in each pair and a
‘Student B worksheet to the other. Tell students not to look at each other’s worksheets.
Explain that they have to describe the contents of their bags to their partner, who must
draw the contents inside the empty bag in the worksheet. Encourage them to ask the
question, What's in your bag? and to answer using the appropriate article or plural form,
a book, an apple, three business cards, etc. before they start. Students check the task by
comparing their drawing to their partner’s drawing.
To make it more challenging you could turn it in to amemorisation task. Student A has one
minute to memorise what is in his/her bag before turning over his/her picture so he/she
cannot see it. He/she describes it to Student B who draws it. Student B then has a minute
to memorise his/her bag’s contents before describing them to Student A who draws them.
Students then compare their drawings.

Distribute the worksheets. Put Ss into pairs AA and BB to
complete their words with the correct vowels. Monitor and
check. Then put Ss into AB pairs and tell them to ask and
answer about the silhouettes using What's this? I's a ... and
What are these? They're ... Ss first say the corresponding ette~
(A-F) or number (I-6) and then ask the correct question.
Model an example with a student. Feed in How do you spell
