interpretation of the novel not another individuals.

Newspaper
Must be typed
2 articles for paper
Heading-name of the newspaper-based on book
o Example: for Twilight: The Twilight Press or

Make a CD soundtrack for the book,


Just like people do for movies. Make sure each song
represents a part of the book and write out for me why. (if
you can't burn the CD than print or write all the lyrics or use
youtube) You need 12 songs.

Oral Report/PowerPoint presentation


Must include/must cover:
o Title and author-a few details about the author
o What does the title mean?
o Plot
o Setting
o Major and Minor characters and their motivations
as well as personality traits
o Tone
o Mood
o Theme
o Point of View
o Level of reading
o Who should read the book and why?
PowerPoint must include backgrounds and pictures
o Must be at least 8 slides
Oral Report-must turn in a written copy either typed or
on note cards
Collage

Must be done on a sheet of tagboard/posterboard.


Must include at least 20 pictures with captions

May be hand-drawn or computer generated
You may do a collage without any captions if you do
more than 25 pictures.
You may use one picture from the novel or the book
cover. All other pictures should be your interpretation
of the book. Think of the mental images you formed
while reading.

***The concept of the collage is to tell the story of the book through pictures. Example:
Twilight; Edward makes me think of marble because his skin is like marble and diamonds
because it shimmers like diamonds so I have a picture of diamonds and marble
overlapping.

Poetry

At least 4 poems:
o At least 5 lines each
Based on the book in some way. May be your reflection
on the novel.
Must be typed

You may present your poems by attaching them to
tagboard/posterboard and designing a background.

Drawing/Painting/Other Artwork

Letter to the Author

Sculpture
You may use whatever medium you choose; modeling clay,
playdough, etc.
Create a sculpture of a character. Use any combination of
soap, wood, clay, sticks, wire, stones, old toy pieces, or any
other object. An explanation of how this character fits into
the book should accompany the sculpture.

Design a gravestone for one of the characters.

Something artistic that relates to the character

Make a "wanted" poster for one of the characters or objects
in your book.
Include the following:
o (a) a drawing or cut out picture of the character or
object
o (b) a physical description of the character or object
o (c) the character's or object's misdeeds (or deeds?)
o (d) other information about the character or object
which is important
o (e) the reward offered for the capture of the character
or object.
Board Game
Create a board game based +on events and characters in the
book you read.

o By playing your game, members of the class should


learn what happened in the book.
o Your game must include the following:
a game board
a rule sheet
clear directions
events and characters from the story.
Job Application
Obtain a job application from an employer in our area, and
fill out the application as one of the characters in the book
you read might do.
o Before you obtain the application, be sure that the job is
one for which a character in your book is qualified. If a
resume is required, write it.
Court Case
You are a prosecuting attorney putting one of the characters
from the book you read on trial for a crime or misdeed.
Prepare your case on paper, giving all your arguments.
Make a time line of the major events in the book you read.
o Be sure the divisions on the time line reflect the time
period in the plot.
o Use drawings or magazine cutouts to illustrate events
along the time line. **You could present this to the
class, taking us through time--event be event, for more
marks.
o Gather a large collection of current events that reflect
incidents that closely parallel those in your novel.

Interview
Interview one on the characters from the novel that you read
or the author. Of course this is an imaginary conversation.
Place yourself in the same position as the character or author
and write from their point of view.

Video Interpretation
Make a video interpreting several scenes from the book.
It must include dialogue if it is included in the novel.
Also must include at least one change in setting (time and
place).
o You may need other students to help you play the roles.
o You must include an introduction to the scenes so that
the viewer knows what leads up to the action.
o Try to include scenery, costume, props, and anything
else that is necessary to set up your scenes.
Create a Childhood for a Character
If your main character is an adult, try to figure out what he or
she would have been like as a child.
Write a story of his or her childhood in such a way that
shows why he or she is the way he or she is in the novel.

School Counselors Recommendation Letter


Write a summary appraisal from the school counselors point
of view that assesses the characters academic and personal
qualities and promise for study in college.
The college is particularly interested in evidence about:
o Character
o Relative maturity
o Integrity
o Independence
o Values
o Special interest/s
o Any noteworthy talents or qualities
Why do you feel this student would be well-suited to attend
college?
Yearbook Entries
Imagine what three or four characters from your novel were
like in high school.
Cut out a picture of a person from a magazine or draw a
portrait to represent each character.
o Mount one picture per page and under each picture
place the following information which you will create:
Nickname of character
Activities, clubs, sports they were in and what
years
Class mock award such as class clown
Quotation that shows something about the person
and what is important to him or her
Favorites such as colors and foods
A book that has had a great impact on him or her

o Decide whose yearbook this is and have the other


characters sign the yearbook and write a going away
note dependent on characters relationship with the
other and their personalities
Create a Characters Room
We learn a lot about people by what they keep in their
closets, what they have on their walls, what they select to put
in a room. Select a character you know well and create a
living room, bedroom, kitchen, or some other room that
would mean a lot to a character.
o Draw itinclude colors!
o Write about it, making sure to include and explanation
of why you designed the room as you did.
Diary of a Character
Many individuals choose to write their thoughts or feelings in
a diary or journal.
Create a diary/journal for one of your characters.
o Make sure that the diary/journal looks like something
that the character would have used flowery, leather,
just a notebook, a 3 ring binder.
o Create at least 5 entries for your character including the
date of each entry commenting on something that
happened in the novel and how the character thought
about it. You may over exaggerate the event or you may
make it up if necessary. If you think the character may
have a secret you may include it.
o Try to make the writing look like how the character
would have written. Example; if it is of a young girl
who is very organized do not make the hand writing
sloppy. You may choose to type it and out it into a font
that you believe reflects your character.
Cook Food from the Story

Choose a dish that is mentioned in the novel or choose a dish


that would have been something that your character would
have eaten and enjoyed.
o You may provide enough food for the entire class if you
choose or just for yourself and the instructor.
o Include the recipe and how you made the dish.
o Include an explanation either written or verbal of why
you chose the particular dish and how it relates to the
novel.

Write a Song
Write a song that is inspired or based on the novel.
o Must include instrumentals unless the song is meant to
be a capella.
o Must be performed. Either live or recorded.
o You may use other individuals in performance.
Create a Life box for a Character
Place items in the box that represents the characters:
o Personality traits
o Interests
o Physical appearance
o Hobbies
o Lifestyle
o Items they may have possessed.
Explain why each prop is relevant and why.
Present to the teacher and/or class.

Dream vacation
Where do you think your character would most like to go on
a vacation?
Pick a spot
o describe it, and explain why he or she would want to go
there or download information from the Internet on the
place.
o Then write a day-by-day itinerary of what the character
would do each day and why you think the character
would enjoy this activity.

Advertisements
Find or create advertisements to show your understanding of
a character
o Go through several magazines and newspapers looking
for advertisements of goods you think your character
would like.
o Cut out the pictures, mount them on a poster board, and
under each picture write a few lines about why this
product would appeal to your character.
A pamphlet
Think of an issue that was very important to your character.
o Then create a pamphlet aimed at persuading others of
the importance of the issue.
Include factual information, testimonials, pictures
or graphics, etc.
For instance, Charlotte from The True
Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi (1990, Or14

chard) might want to create a pamphlet explaining


the reasons women should have more life choices.
Community resources for characters
After looking in the phone book and on the Internet, create a
file of community resources that would help a character in
your novel cope with an issue.
If the main character has alcoholic parents, you could collect
pamphlets, names of self-help groups, and any agencies that
address the problem.
Then create a display board so others can see what is
available

Rewrite the story for younger children


Make a 5-7 page picture book showing the most important
parts of the story.
Write at least one sentence on each page to summarize.
Must include color.
Must be in the format of a book with front and back cover as
well as 5-7 pages within the book itself.
o You may want to look at childrens books to remind
yourself.
Graffiti
Write Graffiti about the book on a "brick" wall. Cut your
words out of construction paper and glue them on the wall.
o Must include at least 35 words and in different formats
as well as an explanation of each.
o Must include color.

Fashion
Design costumes for dolls and dress them as characters from
the book. Explain who these characters are and how they fit
in the story.
You may do paper dolls if you wish. You must include at
least 5 characters from the book.

Travel Brochure
Make a travel brochure advertising the setting of the story.
Must include color.
Brochures are a full page with pictures, descriptions, area
attractions, types of entertainment available, and the reasons
why someone should want to visit.
Description of Characters
Write a FULL (physical, emotional, relational) description of
three of the characters in the book.
Draw a portrait to accompany each description.
Running for Office
Nominate one of the characters for an office in local, state or
national government.
Which office should they run for?
What are the qualities that would make them be good for that
office?
Design a campaign for your character.
o Create a slogan for your characters campaign.
Either create 2 posters using the campaign slogan
and graphics.

Or create a video of the campaign. watch some


online campaign videos.

Evening News
Write the plot of the story as if it were a story on the evening
news.
Film yourself as the news broadcaster delivering the story.
Lost Scene
Write a scene that has been lost from the book.
Include why the scene was deleted from the book and what
the additional scene adds to the book.

Another Character
Add another character to the book.
o Include a vivid description of the character
Physical appearance
Emotional attachments
Personality traits
Relationship to other characters
Where does he/she live
Why would he/she be put there?
What part would he/she serve?
Diorama
Construct a diorama:

(three-dimensional scene which includes models of


people, buildings, plants, and animals) of one of the
main events of the book. Include a written description
of the scene.
Timeline
After reading a book of history or historical fiction
make an illustrated timeline showing events of the story
draw a map showing the location(s) where the story
took place.

Postcards
Create a series of postcards that are sent back and forth between
two of the characters.
Use accurate addresses and times, you may make them
up for in the future if you wish but make it real to what
could potentially happen with those characters.
Online Dating Profile
Write a profile for an online dating service for one of the
characters.
Include:
Brief description of the person written in 1st
person
Important characteristics that would be asked
about on a site (do a little research here to find
out)
Put it in a format that it would appear online
FaceBook Profile
Create a FaceBook page for one of the main characters.

Include: photos, fill out the About Me, relationships, posts,


comments, and show the characters interests through shared
posts and the like.
T-shirt
Make a t-shirt that would be worn by one of the characters or that
represents the novel.
Must purchase a plain t-shirt and add to it. Fabric paint,
sequins, embroidery and such can be added. Nothing
professional and all art should be done by the student.
Quilt Squares
DESIGN AND CREATE SQUARES FOR A QUILT.
Depict favorite scenes or characters. Then
stitch/draw/paint the quilt together. The individual
squares may be drawn with marking pens or done in
stitchery. The quilt may be a wall hanging, a curtain for
a private reading area in the room, or presented to the
school as a class gift.
Texting
Create a text conversation between two or more of the characters.
At least 20 messages going back and forth and of
considerable length.
Should include some major plot points.
Word Games
INVENT WORD GAMES FOR YOUR BOOK.
Create crossword puzzles, word games, and acrostics
incorporating unfamiliar vocabulary words, characters, and
settings.

Mobile
FASHION A MOBILE FROM ITEMS RELATED TO A
STORY.
The mobiles add color and movement to a room. Use string,
hangers, etc.

DIY
MAKE HAND LOOMS AND WEAVINGS THAT
PORTRAY A DESIGN IN A BOOK.
Almost anything - from paper plates to forked sticks - will
make a loom when strung with yarn, rope, or cord. Check art
and craft books for directions. Then use the creations as wall
hangings or mobiles.

Talk Show
Pretend you are a talk show host and interview the character
or the author.
This should be done on video and include a written script that
is to be turned in as well.
You can partner up with someone to complete this task or
interview yourself from a different angle.
Dress the part-dress like a Talk show host and like the
character or author you are interviewing.

Design Tattoo
Design a tattoo that one of the characters would get.

Include:
where they would get it,
the accurate size,
where on their body they would put it, and why as well
as drawing out the tattoo.
You can piece together different pieces but should
include artwork or some visual representation of the
piece.

FBI/CIA DOSSIER
CREATE A DOSSIER ON A CHARACTER. Pretend that you are
a foreign spy sent to report on your chosen character. Compile into
a secret file general and specific information regarding your
character. Don't forget the photo.
Put in a format that would like, like something an
FBI/CIA Agent would have in order to work a case. The
outside coverlook at some examples on the internet.
