Debris in Space Explanatory Essay

In the articles Space Junk by Tony Helies and Space Waste by Laura
Modigliani, both authors discuss how space debris occurs and the problems that it
can cause. Space debris can occur in a variety of ways, such as by astronauts
dropping supplies or from satellites and shuttles. This debris, even the tiniest
piece, can cause major problems.
Space debris occurs by collisions, satellites, and by astronauts dropping
objects. In Space Junk by Helies, the author talks about how the debris in space
is caused by old satellites, rockets, and litter. For example, on line 3 in the text,
Helies states, Three days before, on March 11, 2001, astronaut James Vose had
dropped a large vise while he was on a space walk. The vise had floated away. In
Space Waste by Modigliani, the author also discusses on line 17 that there are
tens of millions of tiny pieces of trash swirling around Earth. Some of the debris is
caused by old satellites that no longer function. As Modigliani states in her text on
line 14, When satellites become outdated or can no longer function, they become
space junk. All of this left over material stays in space and accumulates.
This space debris can cause many problems. It can even cause damage to
fully functioning satellites and shuttles. In Space Junk, Helies states on line 35
that, In 1983, a speck of white paint hit one of the windows of the space shuttle,
butting a hole in the outer layer of the window glass. This space junk can also
cause damage on Earth. In Space Waste, Modigliani states, In 1991, a huge
satellite that was as large as a school bus fell toward Earth. It fell to the ground in
western Canada, and luckily did not harm anyone.
As you can see, space debris occurs in many ways and from a variety of
sources, causing many problems not only in space but here on Earth. Space debris
occurs from collisions, satellites, and by astronauts dropping objects. The damage
it causes can be seen on satellites, shuttles, as well as on land.
